Tomorrow is the big day...any hints, tips, what can we expect?

There might be some Eastman specific info from earlier years here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/240407-audition-tips-info.html

Good luck to your d.

We're heading there this afternoon for a cello audition tomorrow. It's the first of the big ones, and Eastman's repertoire list is the longest. I am bringing a book.

How long the audition go is probably instrument dependent. Clarinet auditions 3 audition seasons ago went 20 minutes. There is also an "interview" with a different faculty member (administrator?) in a small group of 2 - 3 prospective students. And there's the obligatory music theory test. That's about it. Audition was in the morning so we were out just after lunch, IIRMC.

I know that flutes had same-day callbacks that year, as well as voice, I think. It's mostly driven by the instrument you're auditioning on. Clarinet auditions were done with a single professor viewing.

Thanks. D is a horn player. According to the letter the first thing up after the convocation is the theory test and aural skills. On the site it says she will need to interview with the music ed dept (not sure if she also has to interview with the brass people).

What scares me (and yes, this is the most demanding audition as the previous poster said) is that the website says they can accomodate up to 1000 appointments a day!!! I realize a good portion of those wil NOT be horn players but I am wondering how parking is on audition day and doesn't the school get crowded with all those extra kids, instruments and parents?

Oh and good luck to your D Mom4!!! I will be there too, maybe I should bring a book but will surely be carrying a giant cup of coffee and a look of patience. You can recognize me bc I will probably be sitting somewhere playing games on my cellphone!! It is what I do when bored or nervous!!

It has been a few years so maybe things have changed. We had no problem parking close to school and always found a spot near the dorms. I seem to remember needing to feed quarters into a meter. Don't plan on doing much sitting or playing on the cell phone. It does indeed get extremely crowded with lots of activity and noise. With luck you might find a quiet spot across the street in the library and admin areas. The coffee/sandwich shop is at the end of the street. I believe the name is Java's, but I am pushing my poor memory. You might consider carrying a substantial snack. I don't think there are many other worthwhile eating areas.

Edad, I remember Eastman from when D played at the theater for NYSSMA Conference All State and there was not much in the immediate area. If I recall, I walked from our hotel to the theater that day looking for a coffee shop along the main street to no avail. I was shocked since this is a college campus I figured a Starbucks or 2 would be usual. We would like to try the cafeteria while we are there if possible. D says she regrets not doing that at the Ithaca audition last week, we will also be doing that at SUNY Fredonia which is where she will be auditioning Saturday. After that we have only one more, NYU in 2 weeks!!

Be sure he warms up at the hotel before you go to the campus. When we were there, they had locked the practice rooms until after the group meeting and day's agenda had begun. Eventually when there was a time and place to warm up, it was in a large room, with others also warming up. Efforts to warm up in a corner or hallway were quashed. Good luck.

The area around Eastman is awful for food or shopping. There is that Java's sandwich/coffee place, but good luck finding Starbucks or anything else....it's just not there!

BUt good luck to your daughter! Food isn't the highlight of the day!

Wow, either I'm easy to please gastronomically (doubtful) or people didn't walk those few extra feet. Just down the street and around the corner from Java are a few restaurants, 2 of which we dined at and found to be quite nice, a Chinese/Sushi Bar place and a Mediterranean (Mideastern?).

D commented that dining wouldn't be a problem if she went to Eastman...

We looked, believe me. It was no mean feat finding a dinner spot, and we aren't that picky, just didn't want Arby's or Micky D's. We ended up finding a brand new place which had just opened, but it was driving distance from Eastman.

It is very possible that we just didn't have the lay of the land, but we definitely walked...and saw NADA!

We did that Mediterranean restaurant, and it was great. Do not remember what it was, but it was within 2-3 short walking blocks.

Parking around Eastman is really bad. There is a parking garage in the vicinity, but even that can fill up.

For the audition, they probably won't make you play everything you prepared.

For the music ed. interview they asked me questions involving what my parents did, if they came from musical backgrounds, who my teachers were, what age i wanted to teach and why i wanted to teach.

Good Luck!

Euphgal, that is great info to have!! I will pass along to D. IDK if you saw my post but she did find out before Christmas that she was accepted to Crane. She really liked the horn teacher there.

Lorelei, I hope we can find some practice space. We are driving in first thing in the morning. I guess a lot will depend on her audition time.

Hopefully we will get there by 8ish or shortly after. According to emails we got from Eastman this was not a very popular audition day but who knows now. I remember a paid parking lot across from the theater at least and I will be on the lookout for that garage.

Thanks also for the rec of the Mediterranean restaurant. We will be on the lookout. Getting nervous now. D is working tonight so hopefully it will take her mind off things. I wanted her to take the night off but she said it is better for her this way. I always go with her instincts on these things.

Son did regional auditions a number of years ago so I can't help with that part. However, there is a parking garage next to the school so try there for parking first. There is also street parking in the area if you are prepared to walk a few blocks. Bring quarters. As for eating places, as you walk out of the main doors turn to your left. You will walk right past Java's for coffee and sandwiches. When you get to the next street just past Java's, turn right again onto East Avenue. There are several decent eating places within the next few blocks, including a Chinese place with great dim sum at reasonable prices and an Italian place.

Thanks Shennie. We are getting ready to go now...ahhhhh!! I hope D slept more than I did last night, I was awake every hour, mostly because I obsess over not getting up on time.

Oh, no Mof3Stars, I do that too. And driving long distances to these auditions on practically no sleep, bad hotel beds, stress, etc. make this audition experience uniquely exhausting. The trick is not to let your child know how you're feeling! My husband is doing the next two auditions---Yay!

I hope all goes well, today--let us know.

Just posting to say I'm thinking of you today, MomOf3Stars. My S is currently in Houston for his Rice audition - also horn. Nice thing about grad school - I don't have to go!

to Momof3Stars: I can't add anything to the comments people have made about Eastman, since after a tour in the fall and All-State, my D. decided not to apply (kind of wish she had, just to see whether she would get in). I do know there is a good coffee shop pretty much next door! However, I can tell you something about Fredonia, since we were there last Sat. Plenty of free, unlocked practice rooms, cafeteria food available at one of the dining facilities, there also is a caf

Thank you all for the great information which we will stow away for S's audition next Friday. Good luck to those there this weekend!
