The application for Wesleyan has no supplement. I find this hard to believe and it leads me to conclude that they are SAT whores who wont concentrate much on your essays.

Well, 1) the interview is usually a big part of it. If you can't make it for an interview, whether at this school or with a representative, I'm sure there are things that can be arranged (like a telephoned interview).

2) The common app. essay plays a huge role.

3) I wish we were SAT whores. Then maybe LACs would get more respect.

Actually, I agree. I wished there were more essays so I could tell them more about myself, or something.

However... I'd consider Wesleyan anything but SAT whores. I think they just want to make it easier for applicants, which is a nice thought, I guess.

I don't think they are SAT whores any more than their peer schools (your HS transcript is the most important part of any college app, btw). I've spoken to admissions officers about the brevity of the application and it was their opinion that students already fill out a huge raft of forms for every school they apply to and that one essay is usually sufficient. So make it good (also you can enclose extra stuff if you feel like there's no place to say something you think is important).

There are a lot of platitudes repeated about admissions at Wesleyan|Brown|Vassar|Oberlin|[insert name here]. They're generally not that true - Wesleyan does it about the same as every other top school. If you really want a good idea of how it works, I highly recommend Jacques Steinberg's "The Gatekeepers".

Ziplocky, I was wondering what the average GPA for accepted applicants at Wesleyan is? I'm only aware the average SAT score is around 1400. Thanks.

It's hard to calculate the average GPA for any school since they aren't standardized across the US. My HS gave grades on the 0-100 scale, a lot of schools do it on the 4.0 scale, but then some make the max 5.0 or 6.0 with weighting, etc. About 3/4 of admitted students were in the top 10% of their class (though that only takes into account students whose schools report rank, and more and more of them don't these days).

So what is the typical GPA? A average? A- average? Any numbers will help. Thanks :)

Well, that really depends on how hard your high school is. At mine, the only people I know of who got in were straight A students (95.0 or higher). A friend of mine who had a B+ average was right on the causp of the top 10% did not get in. This is mostly because my high school's grades were kind of a joke and As were given out like candy. I definitely know of people who had B/B+ averages in their schools and got in because their school was actually challenging.
