I heard Steinberg’s the best. (Though, I have noticed that his lectures tend to be early in the morning… and they fill up really really fast.)

A note about Rubinson, he’s no longer doing satire and humor as the main topic of his course. (He said he got tired of it.) It’s something about social commentary or something. (I forgot.) … Anyways, if you’re looking to watch Southpark for his class, it ain’t happening.

I’m taking Eng Comp 3 with Shaffer right now, and she’s not too bad. You don’t really have to talk that much in her class. (Big plus for someone who’s not really mentally there most of the time.) But her assignments generally require at least 2 or 3 pages, and her 3 main essays are 4+, 5+, and 6+ pages which I think I think are a bit long for a freshman English class, but I’m not really basing my opinions on anything, so I wouldn’t know. Her readings (from the APS reader) are not too bad. Some are kinda interesting. (The other two books you can probably get away without ever reading. I never did…)

I’m a fairly decent to good writer, so I actually do get A’s on my papers. (Though, honestly, I think she grades quite leniently for papers I thought were utter all-nighter bs’ing.) I heard some English teachers don’t give A’s unless they think your paper is super super amazing, above and beyond, and that’s really not the case with Shaffer. (Main reason I chose Shaffer, there’s an actual chance of getting an A. There seems to be a lot of easy B professors, but no A professors.) The great thing about her essays is that she makes the draft due and then the final. She also makes you have an appointment with her to talk about your rough draft so you can tell what she’s looking for.

Though, I have noticed my other classmates thinking she’s a hard grader, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I took AP English (Lit & Lang) in high school, and I’m always a B or A writer. But, I hate academic writing, just because it does not come easily to me. Shaffer doesn’t really give busy work, but assignments that get you thinking about the paper you’re gonna have to write, so it does come a bit easier when I actually have to write it. I’m sure there are easier professors (just cause her assignments can be long sometimes), but she works for me.

In winter quarter, I briefly had Betty (?) Davis for about two weeks before I dropped the class. From what I can tell, her assignments were a bit on the time consuming side. And she seems to be the type of professor that wants you to talk a lot in class. That’s about all I really can say about her.
