I'll be entering as a student in the CoE and I will need to enroll in an English/Comp course from List A and one from List B. Any suggestions?

At CalSO, is it better to sign up for a course from B for the first semester and a course for A for the second if you believed that you scored a 4 for the AP English test?

CoE has an extended R&C-b list
Also, from what I have heard (I tested out, so I have no experience of my own), R&C courses are often hit & miss because they are taught by GSIs and in humanities departments GSIs tend to have inconsistent teaching schedules.

I have heard Comp Lit and Rhetoric R&C courses tend to be harder than other R&C courses. I have also heard Asian American Studies and South Asian Studies have easy R&C courses (they are often hit & miss).

AP Lang 4 or 5 = no R&C-a necessary
AP Lit 4 = no R&C-a necessary
AP Lit 5 = no R&C-a and no R&C-b necessary (side note: CoE students are still required to take an R&C-b)
IB English A1 HL 5/+ = no R&C-a and no R&C-b necessary (side note: CoE students are still required to take an R&C-b)

A 4 on an English AP test does allow you to skip A-list courses, but at CalSO, it is impossible to know whether you had scored a 4/5 on AP Lit (provided you didn’t score a 4/5 on AP Lang).

When you do get your scores back, if you had signed up for an A-list course, can you back out of it and enroll in something else instead?

I was thinking to sign up for a B-list course for the fall semester and then an A-list course for the spring semester. The B-list is required anyways, but if I received a 4 on the test, then I wouldn’t need to take the A-list course. How’s this idea?

^for people in your situation the best idea would be to take L&S R44, which can be used for R&C-a or -b. The problem is, I think it isn’t offered this fall

Here’s an idea. You could hold off on R&C courses just for this fall until you know what your AP score is. Take another prerequisite course if you can. Just a thought I felt like throwing out there.

You can always take R&C-b in the spring of freshman year, and R&C-a in the fall of sophomore year, and not worry about English your first semester.
