Hey... I absolutely adore UPenn! I love everything about Penn EXCEPT the fact that I probably won't get in. :) I will probably apply ED... but with my 3.83 GPA and 31 ACT, even as a legacy I understand I will probably receive a rejection letter.

SO... do you know of any schools that have a similar feel to UPenn, but aren't as competitive.

I am looking for a medium/large school with quirky kids that is strong academically. I'd prefer it not to have a huge greek life, but if the kids are nice and it isn't that stereotypical greek life, frats and sororities are okay.

Any ideas? I am very worried I won't get into any of my schools! I am on the verge of cutting out half to 3/4 of my reaches and piling up the good fits and safeties.

If you are looking for quirky people (I consider myself one), apply to Rice! It is full of them We also don’t have frats or sororities. Instead, we have the residential college system (like the house system in Harry Potter), which makes the social life here a lot more inclusive and fun. The people here are down to earth and collaborative, more so than Penn (I heard Penn is pretty cutthroat).

Rice is also very strong academically, especially in engineering, sciences, architecture, and music.

Good luck with applying to Penn ED! If you don’t get in, be sure to consider Rice!

silk nik- RICE sounds like a great school! BUT it is probably just as hard to get into as UPenn, or very close… also, I forgot to mention but I am interested in staying relatively close to the northeast. I live in NY state near the VT/MA/NY border and I don’t want to travel more than 6 or 7 hours by car. So Texas is quite a bit further than I’d prefer, ha.

Thanks! But again, reaches! It seems only reach schools fit the criteria I am interested in… I guess I’ll have to alter my criteria when looking for safeties and good fits.

Northwestern, Michigan, and Georgetown, for sure. They aren’t significantly less competitive but you’re bound to get into at least one of them if you like all three and apply, especially if you apply to Michigan through “Early Response” or whatever (which you can do alongside Penn ED).

Dont go to Syracuse!!! my brother goes there on full tuition and absolutely hates the campus, amd academics. Also too much of a party scence. It will be an extreme safety for you if you consider it.

I live in Philadelphia and my D goes to school in Boston…and I second the idea of BU. If you like Philadelphia, you will LOVE Boston. It’s like Philadelphia with nothing but college students.

I love Penn and I am in the same situation as you, probably getting rejected ED. I think if you really love Philly try Villanova. Also consider Boston U, Georgetown, and NYU.
