Easy to get to attractions outside the city?

Can Pitt students easily get to places like the surrounding malls and kennywood amusement park which are close to, but not in the city? (Without a car)

They can ride the entire Pitt bus system for free. I know my son has gone shopping plenty of times on the bus system.

He loves the fact that the entire system is free to use and he takes advantage of it.

I know my daughter has taken the bus all over as well. I also know that she WALKED back to campus after a movie that ended at 11:30 after the last bus had come by at 11:15; she told me that story later. My daughter has no interest in having a car in Pittsburgh because of the buses. She takes the bus to the airport as well.

The buses are not as convenient as having your own car, but having your own car comes with a long list of hassles in a city. :)

Hello,

One of the things most Pitt students love is the free Port Authority bus transportation. There are tons of buses that can take you to any surrounding area of the city. As MD Mom said, having a car is convenient but comes with a lot of hassle. I am a senior this year and I needed to have my car here due to an internship I had during the fall. Parking in Oakland is very, very difficult and driving around Oakland can be tricky at times. Luckily my apartment building offers parking spots, but there are plenty of other students who have to fight for street spots everyday. I’d say when you’re just starting out at Pitt, a car is not a necessity. The bus system is easy to navigate once you’re used to it!
