Eating clubs

Can anyone explain the function and membership of the "eating clubs" at Davidson? I believe I read that they are mostly for women. Are they similar to Greek organizations? Any idea what percentage of students are unaffiliated with Greek organizations and/or eating clubs?

Thanks in advance for the info.

I’ll just tell you what I know about them from visiting: Eating clubs are for women only. They’re basically the equivalent of sororities, since Davidson has only one sorority but several fraternities. They’re just places to socialize with friends. I don’t think they can be considered Greek organizations in the traditional sense, and they’re not residential.

Oh and I believe they are called eating houses at Davidson.

BTW - the on-campus fraternities are also not residential.

Thanks for the info!

I was told by a mother who had two daughters graduate Davidson that you can join the eating club of your choice by sophomore year. Freshman year you have to be a bit more flexible although your preferences are considered. I like the aspect of no one can be rejected from the women’s eating clubs by second year…which is not the case at Princeton where a lovely friend of mine’s daughter was most disappointed to be passed over at the eating club of her choice despite having some members pulling for her.

Davidson has a egalitarian feeling in my opinion. We know a lot of wonderful Davidson grads and second son looked at Davidson with great seriousness. Although the frats can and do reject students, there is a lot of courtesy on campus towards all students that is part of the special culture that Davidson has developed over many years.

I am not a fan of frats personally although one of my sons went with a frat at his college and another chose the life of an independent. Just my bias. I also dislike the way some southern schools had frats but no sororities (my alma mater Furman for instance, but that has all altered for the better in the last 30 years). I also dislike how some schools allow male greeks to have “territory” in dorms but female greeks do not. (yes, I am talking about Duke, Wake Forest and others where males were allowed to cluster in residential dorm halls etc)

I believe Davidson has a newish female sorority that was historically African American.

Anyway, Davidson has a culture that is very ethical and intimate and I really think they deserve credit for this
