EC activities for in-state applicants

How important are EC activities for an in-state applicant? I'm looking through these threads and it seems like a lot of strong applicants got turned down from UNC.

Asian (chinese)
-IN-STATE (Raleigh)
-4.3 gpa
-35/510
-1300 M/CR | 1950 overall
-7-8 APs by Senior year

My EC activities pretty much blow. Club membership and that's about it. I wasn't very active and by the time I realized how important it is to be involved, it's a little too late. I think I might have blown my chances by not showing a non-academic side of my life. I'm a junior.

My old neighbor(Blake Crouch, author of Locked Doors and Desert Places) graduated from UNC a few years ago and said that you needed very strong EC's to get in. But with a good GPA, high SAT score, and all those AP classes, you might get it. Give it a try.

I think average ECs are fine if you have the stats.

How strong is strong?

why don't u get a job, thats a pretty strong EC. :)
