EC Activities question

<p>Hey Guys (and girls) of CC,
This is my first thread on here! Let me start off by saying I am a sophomore in high school, who is planning to take my junior and senior year at a community college. Since i am an introvert, I tend to not be involved in clubs/sports outside of school. I've been in key club, and that's about it. I was wondering if doing something like producing my own music or making my own video game (which are my hobbies) would be a good substitute for not doing any EC activities. </p>

<p>Thanks</p>

<p>Welcome to CC. At the top of the Harvard forum is a thread that answers your question: <a href=“Chance Threads - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING ONE - Harvard University - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-university/1420290-chance-threads-please-read-before-posting-one-p1.html&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Hey!
I’m a new member here, but I hope I this helps nevertheless.

Going with the other post, colleges aren’t just looking for organized extracurricular activities - they want to see what you’re passionate about (which can include hobbies and other things that you can pursue on your own). These things aren’t substitutes; they are looked upon equally as extracurriculars. If you like producing music or developing a video game, go for it.

Some ideas are:

  • Develop a video game and publish it in the App Store or the Google Play Store (it can be really simple). You never know if you’ve created the next Flappy Bird.
  • Create an online portfolio of music you’ve produced.
  • Enter contests for the works you’ve created. There are many out there; a quick Google search can return plenty.
  • Take online courses - self-teaching is something very admirable.

If you want, you can start a program in which you teach others (which feels really rewarding).

Also, you mentioned that you’re involved in Key Club - if you like code, you just might enjoy web dev. Maybe run/apply for Webmaster if that’s an available position?

Best wishes for the new year!

OP: you’ve posted on the Harvard forum and not the general Admissions forum b/c I assume you’re a Harvard aspirant. Thus I direct you to their own website. You’ll see H is looking for outstanding applicants – either in scholarly ventures or demonstrating enormous influence and ability in others – people who will add to a dynamic and better their peers.

Being introverted and making music/video games as a hobby probably veers dramatically from what I’ve just listed.
