EC Activity: Caring for Siblings?

Even though my little brother is in high school now (2 years younger than me), I still spend about two hours of everyday to help him with school homework and tests ever since I've started attending high school.

This is obviously not my only EC activity, but is it possible to list "Tutor/Mentor for a younger brother/sister" as an EC activity since I do spend some time daily to help him?

Also, should I elaborate on my case in the "additional comments" section, or should the name and description be fine for the application readers?

Thanks

i have the same question!

sounds like a great thing to elaborate on. really sounds like a great essay topic but you've probably already got that wrapped up I suppose. I think if you elaborated, explained why you do it, how it helps, maybe a little bit about your relationship, you could justify including it. don't put it in as one of the fill-ins though, since it's not particularly straight-forward. this is all only my opinion of course.

Thanks for your reply,

Yes, I've taken care of my essays so I don't think I can attempt to add this bit into them.

I would have thought that this would be quite prevalent for many people who are the older ones in the family. I don't see much a difference with this compared to ... let's say a daily english and math tutor for some kid in a public library. The only difference is that instead of counseling a random person, you're teaching a person you know.

Any one else have any suggestions and comments?

I suggest putting it in the additional info section, and explain what you do and why (parents don't speak English, lack education, work long hours....). What you're doing goes beyond normal chores.

lol. I don't think that's an EC activity you can officially put on there.. o_o.

I have been wondering the same thing.
A lot of people seem to think like MonoTombo, but really, I spend about 1-2 hours a day helping my younger brother and also until this year (Jr) I've had to make him dinner every day and make sure that he got all his stuff ready for school the next day and put him to bed (he's currently in 6th grade) because niether my mom nor my dad came home before 11PM. This year my mom comes home at 6 so I don't have to worry about dinner and stuff but still. This takes time and it prevented me from participating in a lot of the ECs that my friends did and I would have loved to have done.
Shouldn't that count for something?
Or do only children and younger siblings just get that advantage?

Instead of saying 'tutor for little bro/sis', can you just say 'academic tutor'? I don't think that would really be dishonest, but it does sound much better... If there is a special reason why your younger sib needs 2 hours of tutoring a day (seems like a lottt) like maybe a learning disability or some other special circumstance, I think that would be an awesome essay topic. However, if you're just tutoring your sib to help him bump up his grades a bit, I think that's something plenty of older siblings do.

I don't think that plenty of older sibs spend 2 hours a day helping their sibs with homework. The extent of the OP's involvement with their sib's homework is what's remarkable.

Doesn't make sense to put it as an EC, but as other people have said, you should discuss it. I would put it in an essay or the Additional Info.

Maybe so. Just wondering, why do you give your younger sib two hours of HW help every night? Is there a special reason he needs that much tutoring?

Back when I was appying to school (a long time ago !!!) UNC-CH actually had a space to explain family obligations which prevented "official" EC involvement. I would definitely add a supplemental essay explaining the extent of your family responsibilities. Many HS students have family situations which prevent participation in school activities and clubs. I would check with the school, but I think that almost any school would respect family responsibility as an EC. Also, if the guidance counc. has any knowledge of the situation, maybe they could write an additional note verifying it.
