When I say I participated in an EC in the summer, do I mark 9th grade (for example) for the summer before 9th grade or the summer after?
Just a little confused

Just summer. If you pick both summer and a year (or more than one year), that means you also did the activity during the school year(s).

@griffen: When we fill out the activity section, there is both a section for grade year and a section for sschool year and summer.

when I just click “summer”, Common App prompts me to fill in a year (9,10,11,12) as well. I think karenoona is asking which year we should pick if the activity occurred during the summer.

Yes. The commonapp asks in what year that summer activity took place. Therefore, I’m asking if 9th grade would correspond with the summer before it or after.

Summer before I think

I’d say ‘after’, cause, when you start your very first school (grammar school), you start in fall. Likewise, we start each new grade in fall. Incorrect?

You are a rising 10th grader in the summer before you 10th grade year and for that summer you’d check the 10th/summer box. Similar answer for other summers.

It has to be the summer before, else what would you say you did in the summer for grade 12, which would come only next year (for a senior)?

Maybe that’s for transfer students or something?
