I had a question about extracurriculars. Would being a very active writer for websites like AssociatedContent and being a citizen reporter for online newspapers be even worth mentioning in a college application? How about organizing and hosting the first school-wide spelling bee at my hs? Thanks.

Yes and yes. You might want to clarify the categories, though.

ooh...nice

Thanks for the replies guys. For the spelling-bee, I organized it with my literature club (which I'm the president of). So even though it was my idea to begin with, I didn't organize all of it by myself single-handedly. Should I still put it on my future college application?

You should still put it on as part of your "Lit Club" EC. It doesn't matter if you didn't organize it single-handedly as long as you don't claim that you did.

Also, make sure your guidance counselor is aware of these activities so they can be mentioned in your recommendation. In particular, the spelling bee gives an indication of your potential to contribute on a college campus, and that would be a terrific thing for the counselor to mention in your recommendation letter. e sure they have enough information about what these activities require from you so your counselor can highlight your strengths and contributions in his/her letter.

For the activities that don't fit neatly into the EC boxes, consider either sending a separate activity sheet about them, or detailing them in the "additional informaiton" section of your application.

thanks for the advice
