What is the ideal for ECs? I really only have 3 (Martial Arts, Newspaper, Job) but they are major things that have taken up all of my time after school throughout high school. Do I need this huge list of accomplishments and ECs or is it fine to have a few ECs in the situation i do.

Meh, I’m not sure. If it makes you feel better, a girl at my school got into Yale with only two school clubs that meet bi-monthly. Obviously this is a personal anecdote, but I think it illustrates my theory well. Colleges want depth, not breadth. If you’re passionate about what you’ve done in a few ECs, and you show the adcoms that, I think you’re fine.

That is absolutely fine and usually preferred. Adcoms like to see dedication and passion in a few ECs rather than mere participation in several.

^ Agree. And the common wisdom is that a job is an especially valued “EC.”

When I applied to college, I had around 4 major ECs and other random ones.

Leadership is always nice to see, but you do not need a boat load of EC’s

Quality and passion is important, not long lists.
