EC strength?

I’m pretty curious how my extra-curriculars help me in the application race that is going to come up next year. I’ve done all these ECs because I’ve thought they were/are interesting…but I don’t know how much they will help me. Basically I’m asking if these ECs will help me in the admissions process.

By the end of my junior year, I'll probably have an average GPA, 4.20 (W) and 3.88 (UW) (I had a bad freshman year). My SATs (the new one) will probably be okay - good, but I think my ECs make me stand out.

By the beginning of my senior year, I'll have done the following things:

2 straight summers of interning at the Breakthrough collaborative. Basically BC, is where you become a teacher for 8 weeks, and teach a course to middle school students. Although BT is a large internship, it’s mostly for college students, with probably only 50 (out of 400) interns being HS students. Last summer I taught physics, this summer will probably be bio. I held a leadership position last summer, which was representing the site at a yearly speech to both parents (one day) and local business leaders (another day). Audience members included the VP of Applied Materials. He said I spoke better than some CEOs he has met! 

I helped start a tutoring company called Results Tutoring Group. This is pretty straightforward (in addition to being VP, I'm also a tutor, tutoring 5 hrs/wk).

I'm currently starting a branch of RTG called Results Music Group, where several high school students provide music lessons for junior high/elementary school students.

I've started a few clubs at my high school. National History Club, and next year I'm going to start a branch of UNICEF at my HS (been researching all this year)

And finally, I've done some scientific research dealing with UVB/UVC rays and white blood cells. I've won a couple awards for this. I’m currently trying to develop a new project pertaining to problem solving/sleeping.

Yearbook! Frosh year I was a staff member, soph/junior year I am/was a section editor, next year, if everything goes just right, I'll be editor in chief. Our yearbook is ranked high the nation, and it's basically like managing a company (budget = over $130,000 and profits = over $180,000)

And finally, photography. I’m thinking of submitting a portfolio as a supplement with my application.

not to be a bastard or anything, but bump.

Looks great, and I think it will definately help you.

your ECs are very good, but so are your grades...are your test scores good? i think you'd be a great candidate at a lot of top colleges

Hopefully my test scores will be good. I don't find this SAT crud to be extraordinarily difficult or anything. I'm taking my first SAT (II) in January -- the Math IIc. New SAT in March, and chem/u.s history in May.

sounds good, let us know and best of luck!

Nice! If you can write beautifully about one of the strongest ECs you have, you should do well.

Thanks everyone for your responses. One last question, I PROMISE! What aspect of my ECs do YOU think makes me stand out the most?

As much as i agree with the people above, EC's are not going to get you into a top college. I wasn't the president, VP, or anything in particular, and i got into a top school. The best suggestion i can give you is to write about what has changed you into who you are today, if that be your favorite EC, then write about that. But the best advise i can give you is to sell yourself, not try to impress with with a long list. Good luck next year when you start applying, just remember that the EC that stands out the most to them is the one that has helped mold you into the person you have become today.

im pretty sure my EC got me into a top college

If you don't mind me asking, which college?

JHU...ED (yay im excited)

cannednish, how many people are involved in your tutoring group? Are you tutoring other high school students? Your EC's and grades look really good. Just curious, are you on any sports teams at your school?

My tutoring group (I only cofounded this, I mainly helped with marketing and deployment, a lot of the logistics are run by my friend) has about 20 or so employees, and we only work inside our school. I tutor about 3 other high school students now.

I haven't played any HS sports, but I've played 10 years of intramural soccer.
