I am deeply involved in music and am looking for viable options for leadership positions. I want to start my own club that is musically oriented but cannot think of what exactly it should be. I am genuinely interested in this area and am not doing this for the sole purpose of college (quite frankly, you'd be lying if this was no part of the motivation). A few people have created a chamber music club at my school. I currently am the founder and leader of a brass quintet at my high school. We rehearse regularly and perform at concerts, fund raisers, and other events. I am currently a junior and really want to make a club and serve as its president though. I've had this longing for quite some time. Any Suggestions?

You’re the founder and leader of the quintet. IMO that’s more impressive than a club.

I think you’ve been misled by all the club president ECs you see. The thing is, like lasma said, founding and leading a quintet is much more impressive than just founding and running a club.
Clubs are popular ECs because they are easy, not because they are necessary.

Thanks for the replies. Anyone else? I really need suggestions as to what kind of club I could start. I have heard of “music” clubs but music is a very generic term. I want something that specifically has to do with helping/assisting other band students or something similar. I’m pretty sure I will be president of our school’s Tri-M music honor society chapter as a senior next year, but I just have this yearning to start my own club.

Thanks

Tri-M is the high school music honors society, and it is sponsored by MENC (Music Educators National Conference, one of the main professional organizations for music teachers. Others include ASTA (Am. String Teachers Assoc.) & (MTNA Music Teachers National Association); there are specific vocal/choral and band/jazz organizations, but their names escape me.

If your school is affiliated with MENC, you may want to investigate starting/resurrecting a Tri-M chapter at your school. You’ll need a faculty advisor, and the details are on the MENC website. The other organizations may have similar programs, or a list of ideas for parents, hs students to broaden the community awareness and importance of continued music (and other arts) education in the schools.

One a more service oriented plane, you might want to consider a club that brings music into nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, hospitals, etc. Another thought might be a mentoring program for younger musicians.

Oops… missed that you were already involved in Tri-M. Mea culpa.
