I have an EC that stands out quite madly from the rest of my ECs, which are somewhat focused around community service and the likes. This EC is bboy/hip-hop dancing. I will have been doing it for 2 years once applications come around and I will be part of a crew that has performed around the region and at school. I spend about half an hour practicing everyday, so it will come to 300 hours of practice..

Should I mention it, or does it stand out too much? Are the performances and crew significant enough achievements to warrant a mention?

I think you should. There’s nothing wrong with showing a different side of yourself, and if anything, it makes you sound more interesting and less one-dimensional than having all of your ECs in one area.

My ECs are not really one directional. It’s just that this one stands out a lot. I have 2000 hours of community service (not in the purest form, mind you), many math competition awards and some science projects - loads of leadership roles. Nothing, however, seems to be on the creative side such as music…

But really, are a few performances significant enough?

I think that it’s fine to mention the hip-hop dancing, I’m just not sure it’s that unique. Practicing anything only 1/2 hour a day frankly isn’t that impressive. Musicians and athletes easily put in 1 to 2 hours of practice time per day. I’m not dismissing your EC, but I think you need to keep it in perspective. As for the 2,000 hours of community service, my question is over how many years did you amass that number?

I’d say definitely go for it. Sure, you might want to get a few more hours of practice in there if you can but its worth it to put it on your apps - especially if you love it. They want to see what you’re actually passionate about!

Here how someone explained EC’s to me. Playing an instrument and being in a band is an EC. Taking that talent and sharing it by weekly performing in the children’s cancer ward of your local hospital is an AMAZING EC.

With that in mind, the crew you’re in could perform/tour the area to raise money for the children’s ward, or start a charity that could be sponsored through your dancing.
