EC vs Senior Haus

I get the impression that East Campus and Senior Haus are pretty similar (and I may be completely wrong). Right now, EC is my official top choice in the housing lottery, followed by Senior Haus. I want to know the main differences between the two dorms to see if I might want to switch the two (make EC no. 2, SH no. 1). Any insights on the matter?

I second this question. My impression is that EC has more of a building culture, and SH might be a little edgier than EC. EC is also a lot bigger, so it’s organized more around floors/halls, rather than SH being pretty cohesive as an entire House. Also, SH is supposed to be a lot nicer than EC (A/C, recently renovated, etc.).

Honestly, the best way to answer this question is to just visit both during Orientation. I live in EC and have many friends in Senior Haus, and I feel like it would be doing each a disservice to stereotype. If you are debating between EC and Senior Haus, you will probably also be debating between 41W and 5E if you live in EC, so I would be happy to give you a tour of my hall during Orientation, and I can rope my friends into giving you tours of 41W and Senior Haus.

Yes, Senior Haus is ‘nicer’ and their hot water is generally always ‘on’ and their pipes aren’t made of ‘lead’ and they have ‘air conditioning’ and an ‘elevator’ but EC has its charms as well :)

I also believe that Senior Haus’s floors aren’t made of ‘asbestos’ and their building isn’t ‘falling down’, but I definitely agree that EC has its charms. =P

You are full of lies, it will take an entire demolition crew to make this building go anywhere.

Because god knows Tetazoo has tried.

The asbestos is pretty much gone, I think. I know 5E got abated a few years ago. And like k4r3n2 said, the building is sure not going anywhere. The drywall is pretty easily breakable, but not the building.

Also, I’m reminded of stories from some of my older friends about how when the Haus got renovated, a lot of its residents were distressed, because they were afraid that incoming frosh would want to live there for the facilities instead of for the people and culture.

The halls of EC and the Haus are different - the ones at the Haus are smaller, and the dorm as a whole is more integrated, but there’s still a personality difference between 4th WAR and 3rd HNC* (to pick a random example). At EC, the dorm certainly does stuff together sometimes, but the halls are more obviously living groups unto themselves - at ~40 people each, they’re the size of a large-ish fraternity or small sorority - and while there is sort of a gestalt culture, the personality differences between the halls are very obvious.

*Senior Haus has six entries, which start with the letters W, A, R, H, N, and C. Each hall on the first four floors encompasses half a floor, which lines up with three of those entries (either W, A, and R, or H, N, and C). Unless they have other nicknames (like DoomCom), the halls are known by their number and entry set. So 4th WAR (pronounced “ware”) is the 4th floor, W, A, and R entries. The 5th and 6th floors are much smaller, composing the tower-ish thing on top of the building, and are thus known together as Towers.

Alright, so I got my housing assignment yesterday—Senior Haus, room 454-1. I sent the room assignment chair an email, asking whether the room is a single or double, whether the floor/hall has some sort of name, and who my roommate is. But I thought someone here could let me know about the first two questions (what kind of room it is and whether the floor/hall has some sort of name). Any help appreciated.

Any room with a -1 or -2 at the end of the number (ex. 454-1) is a double.

Hmm I think I’m in 4th HNC, and I think I am either in Nichols or Crafts.

What specific part of the building you’re in doesn’t actually matter - the HNC vs. WAR is the important part.

So what are the differences between HNC and WAR?

It’s not so cut and dry. HNC and WAR(E) vary a lot between floors, and even individual halls can change a lot from year to year (though some don’t obviously).

Just hang out in the dorm during REX, and you will end up where you belong.

Um, HNC is to the left of the elevator and WAR is to the right? I mean, what’s the difference between the east and west parallels of East Campus? It’s kind of hard to stereotype two halves of a building.

I think gonzaemi meant to ask about the difference between 4th HNC and 4th WAR.

I would say that 4th HNC tends to be more hipster-ish and 4th WAR tends to be more gamer-geeky. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT OVERSIMPLIFICATION. Both have pretty strong floor cultures and cohesiveness.

That generalization also doesn’t hold true anymore… I think the only legit generalization that you can make about Senior Haus is that Doomcon is stereotypically gamer geeky, because this is what they’ve decided to be. You should really just participate in in-house Rush and hang out and talk to upperclassmen and such.
