Hey guys,

I'm about to enter UIUC in the fall in the Electrical Engineering curriculum. So to get an opinion from those that have been there/are going there: How's the coursework? What have been the hardest classes in the ECE department? How has the overall difficulty been, content-wise and grade-wise? I'd love to hear from everyone.

Looking forward to coming in the fall-

You'd probably get more replies if you asked more specific questions. I'm a graduate of UIUC ECE, so I can give my input. ECE 110 and Physics 211 are the traditional freshman weeder courses. About 25% of the ECE 110 class gets a D or F, and those students are politely asked to reconsider their choice of major. Likewise, about 25-30% of Physics 211 will fail. This isn't due to a deliberately high passing threshold, but rather reflects that a significant portion of incoming students don't have the right combination of work ethic and talent to make it in Engineering. The ECE classes tend to be curved to a B-, with the average GPA just below 3.0 (due to higher grades in non-ECE classes) and a top 15% of 3.5. In general, anything above a 3.2-3.3 is a pretty good GPA.

It's difficult to rank the ECE courses by difficulty, since everyone is good at different things, and they're all pretty hard in general anyway. There are some very time-consuming design projects, including ECE 110, ECE 385, ECE 391, ECE 411, ECE 412, and ECE 425, to name a few.
