ECE Freshman Mentor Program?

<p>I just got something in the mail from U of I regarding a "ECE Freshman Mentor Program".</p>

<p>"The program begins with a 'kick-off' picnic the first week of classes on Wednesday August 24 at 5:00pm. At the kick-off the mentors and mentees will meet for the first time and discuss life at the University of Illinois, but more importantly, life as students in the ECE Department. Last year's event was a great success with more than 180 participants."</p>

<p>Any thoughts from current students? Does anyone actually utilize this program? Is there a commitment ("mentors and mentees will meet for the first time")?</p>

<p>I haven't heard of this program up until now, so I'm not sure if it's actually useful or a complete waste of time.</p>
