Looks like a pretty solid schedule to me. I see that you’ve worked in time for a lunch break between classes and you have your ECE lab on a good day (i.e. not Monday). (I had my lab on Friday afternoon, because I didn’t want to go back on campus in the night)

Your hardest class would probably be 18-100 and you’ll probably end up hating 76-101 like most people do.

My only concern is your C@CM course at 8:30 am. Most college students are not morning-people so it may hard to drag your butt out of bed that early. I’d advise you to move up sometime later, if possible.

Other than that, everything looks good so far.

Computing is just one day a week now???

Yup…seems like it

Man I missed that boat. Yeah, move the C@CM course.

looks like a good schedule. if you’re ambitious you could probably throw in another course no problem. It makes me smile when I see classes so early… but i guess i was the same way. 8:30 every morning last fall —> no class MWF this fall. everybody learns eventually :P

Wow, your schedule looks great whereas mine it seems I will have to take a bunch of classes on tuesday and thursday back to back.

My ECE lab is on wednesday, not thursday printed below.

@ remindyou

ECE is hard enough…18100 is a weeder class with killer labs…you’ve added to this TWO CS courses. They’re both 100 level but don’t underestimate SCS at CMU-- Add to that, you are going to be writing programs in two different languages-- Java in one and C in the other…seems like you’ve loaded up too much. Can you switch between languages that easily?
If you already program that well- consider the computer placement test (it should be on blackboard) and it’s optional-- but you may surprise yourself and place out of 121.

Current CS and ECE majors will like weigh in too - but as a first semester freshman- taking two CS and one ECE course seems a bit much.
Did you place out of Physics 106 and 107? If not, you should probably take one of those instead or shoot for 21127 Concepts- which is required for ECE majors too.

Run it past Larsen-- I suspect the same response to the two CS classes.

@mom
I am hopefully trying to double major in CS and ECE, but if Intro to Data Structures and Effective Programming at the same time is a bad idea, I can easily switch courses. As for switching to between Java and C, I know both languages already (apart from “effectively in UNIX”, I have only programmed C on Windows)

Also, I didn’t know you could place out of 15-121. I took the AP CS test and I am almost sure I got a 5. If all I have to do is take the placement test, its a much better option that taking the course.

Thanks for all the info.

@ remindyou
You can call the College Board for $9 as of yesterday morning and get your scores over the phone…have you credit card ready…that will end the waiting for another week and you can get your course selection sheet to your CIT advisor and approved in the first round …otherwise it may take you to round 2.

With a “5” you do NOT need to take 15121-- you have credit for that already! YAY
Page not found! - College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University;

If by a rare chance you got a “4” then take the CMU placement test online at blackboard – you can still place out.

Regarding the 15123 class…for SCS students they’ve created a new class 15122 – so run it by both advisors to see which class makes more sense if you plan to double major. The SCS requirements just changed …they are not however in the current SCS webpage.
Read the informational handouts on this page:

Both CS and ECE majors take 15-127 Concepts of Mathematics…
CS majors take it first semester b/c it’s a pre-req to the sequence of CS courses that follows 15251 in the spring, then the sequence of 211,212, 213 (actually only 2 of those require 123- forgot which but you can look it up.
Ece majors take it in the Fall of sophomore year-- but nothing limits taking it sooner if there’s nothing else required that you didn’t AP place out of (Physics, Chem both required for CIT but not for SCS)
One less course to plan for in sophomore year- 18243 is the same as 15213 – cross listed.

So you’re off the hook for 15121-- assuming the 5 on the AP exam…
My advice is to Shoot for 15127 in the fall if you want to take the next round of required CS courses in the Spring with the CS majors.
But of course…everything is approved by your advisor in CIT.

You must enjoy punishment-- those are two really difficult majors!

You’re leaving out 76-101 Interpretation & Argument. I’ve heard that its a good idea to just get it over with.

And you cannot place out of 15-121 even if you get 5 on CS A. Its a class you have to take.You only place out of 15-100. http://www.ece.cmu.edu/~klarsen/registration/CITapcredit.pdf

It might have been different earlier.

@mom
I called and I did get a 5! But the college board phased out CS AB this year so I took CS A, and it looks like I can’t place out of 15-121. I am sure I can do well on the placement test though.

@tennis
Im thinking about taking it in the spring.

It looks like you cannot place out of 15-121 with the placement test too. Ho hum

@ remindyou

Sorry-- didn’t recognize in your first post that the AP CS class wasn’t the AB version…bummer. If you’re comfortable writing programs in two different languages and also taking two comprehensive finals in two different languages- it can work. But ask more students for advice.

Half of the freshman have to take English Spring semester-- there’s nothing wrong with that either…it’s personal preference. Think alot of SCS and CIT students dread the course-- it’s really a choice as to whether getting it over faster or enjoying one’s initial semester weighs more for you.
Either way is fine.
The topic choices are the exactly the same in both semesters.

But 21127 i/Concepts s required to get to the next CS classes as is 121…so best to map out how it all might fit together the first two semester so you don’t get caught off for any pre-reqs…and get advice from both departments.

GOod luck
