I read on one of the threads that someone got 'Waitlist' on the online decision, and then their decision letter said they were admitted to the engineering school, just not their major? Is that true, and does it happen for everyone?

My online decision is as follows:
SCS- waitlist
CIT(ECE)- waitlist

Those are the only two schools I applied to.

I did not receive the letter yet. Above is not entirely surprising for me. Getting rejected or even waitlist on the rest of CIT will surprise me. I knew CIT(ECE) will be hard to get, but I knew I will be considered for CIT overall regardless. But I don't know yet what to make of this since I have not received the letter.

So yes, I would like to hear from others who have similar online decisions but got admitted to cit in a physical letter.

That's what I'm hoping, because I remember reading that in a different thread.

quantize, are you waitlisted too? Thanks for starting that blank line thread. It helped remove rumors.

Yes, I got waitlisted. But I think waitlist COULD mean that I got into engineering, but not my major(ECE).

i got waitlisted at ECE as well....could it mean i got in? i doubt it..

Yeah I don't know, I'm trying to find the thread where I read that.

The reason I am hopeful on cit(admit) (despite cit-ece waitlist) is because of scs-waitlist. quantize let us know what you find. I will search old threads too.

Also, this may help rationalize CMU not posting online decisions ahead of the letters.

Or, this may be my wishful thinking.

well i was in the "first wave". Online i got waitlisted on cit (ece), but got the FAT letter a few days latter admitting me into CIT.

sweet toaster, that's the post I was looking for, yours! I remembered reading it somewhere. Well, this gives me some hope.

quantize, I'm really surprised that you were waitlisted! It's because I agreed with your initial idea that early blank lines generally meant something good. But since toaster got into CIT in general, I'm thinking you will to. I hope this will be true for all the other CITers who were waitlisted for ECE. Keeping my fingers crossed for you guys!

my blank line is 2/24. Not that early. Having been accepted to Ann Arbor, GT, UiUC all in ECE, I will be surprised that I got rejected from cit. But then I again it was not in my first two stated preferences. So I will have to just wait and see. sigh..yet another wait.

I got waitlisted at ECE too...but I don't really care tho...got into MIT few weeks ago :P
edit:I had early blank line too..i guess blank line doesn't mean anything.

quantize, one bad datapoint. The following person was waitlisted for cit(ece), and got a letter for waitlist(ece) only. No automatic admission to cit. So we will have to just wait.

Same with me. Not sure if it is only for ECE or for CIT. I have to consider both possibilities- International Student, LOW CR!!!

I have also been waitlisted to SCS (M-C). Anybody know more about this? I suppose M-C stands for Mellon College? The CIT automatic admission will not apply to me will it?

I was the OP on “confused by online decision” and obviously my post was not clear.

Online the message read: CIT ECE Waitlist

My letter came and I am admitted for all the CiT majors except ECE, but can remain on the waitlist for that major (which I don’t plan to do.)

So congrats to everyone and sorry for the confusion.

Thanks ebhbmom for posting here. Yes, your last posting in the other thread led me to believe that you were waitlisted only in cit-ece, and did not get in cit.

This is much better. You are the second person I see who was waitlisted cit-ece and got cit.

I assume you applied only to cit-ece, and not explicitly to cit as your second preference or anything.

I think it is terrible that CMU, one of the leading technology campuses in the world, has a website that provides such ambiguous information and is causing so much stress and anxiety for applicants. In my case, why couldn’t they list CIT on one line and ECE on another line? Then I would have seen admitted to CIT, wait listed for ECE very clearly.

Even the letter they sent is strange. There’s no CONGRATULATIONS anywhere. It took me a couple of minutes to even understand that I was admitted to CIT because there’s a long paragraph telling me I didn’t get into ECE. The tone of the whole letter is actually pretty non-congratulatory.

Wait a minute guys. So basically, at CMU, being waitlisted = being accepted?
Wow.

Oh and btw, I was waitlisted at ECE, CIT.

waits for package eagerly
:P
