Hey everybody, thanks for helping me out so far! :)

When I called Caltech's coach today with baasketball questions, I felt like I was on speakerphone because my voice was resounding; I could just feel like the answering machine was weird compared to what I normally hear.

Maybe they have "unusual" machines that are years ahead of my comprehension, but it seemed odd. Has anyone experienced this when calling a coach? I called at 4:30 (just got home), so I figured that I would get the machine & call him back in a week or so. Do coaches listen to prospective students to listen to what they have to say, or do they not really care at all about their athletic programs?

I know that schools like Caltech do not sacrifice academics for bball, but I think that I could start just because I looked at their roster (and have heard that mos players don't play high school ball), and I honestly believe that I can contribute more to the team than them.

Does Caltech even recruit? Seems like 75%+ of roster filled on campus w/o recruiting.

What does the warm community of CC have to say about this? Thanks to anyone with advice! :)

The weird echo is probably their voice mail system - it is probably one of the early cheap VOIP systems (I work in the telephone business)…

Seriously, Cal Tech sports are about participation rather than quality. After all, it wasn’t long ago that Cal tech mens basketball had a ten YEAR losing streak of more than 200 games…

From what I have heard, not much help from the coaches regarding admissions. Cal tech is a great school - one of the best in the country - it just isn’t a great sports school and they are OK with that…

^Oh, I know that they were pretty dreadful in the past few years…maybe I could boost their record to 2-23 next year :P! I mean, I read that practice was optional because it was so intense academically.

Thanks for clearing up the phone thing, it just seemed really weird when I called them, almost spooky ;)

Who would pass up playing ball in Cali while going to a great school…
Well, I’ll stick to having great academcis, interesting ECs, and work on some amazing essays next summer. Thanks scualum! :)
