Flagler has been on DD radar for several years.. We live in Europe but happen to be Florida residents. We had a great college road trip in the spring so she sat down with a professor and really enjoyed the information shared. None of the state FL schools fit her desires for smaller size and NCF is not her style overall. Eckerd came into the picture a few weeks ago (thanks to this board) so now she has it narrowed down to two private schools so being a FL resident is doing nothing to help with the tuition but both offer nice rates and merit. Marine Sciences is her degree plan but she also sincerely plans to add on a Teaching degree / certificate for several reasons. Flagler has Education as a minor and we were told it is common to add on. Great...but Flagler is 60%+ instate students. Eckerd is less than 20% but does not offer an Education major or minor. We have not visited Eckerd but will fly out after the acceptance packages are all on the table if it is still on her list. She is not sure how much a large instate population should matter.... does it? Thoughts?

You may want to look into a Florida Resident Access Grant (FRAG)

This is a useful (basic) comparison tool:

It does look that after grants, Eckerd is about $10K a year more in tuition.

Thanks… yes, we have the Bright Scholars, FRAG, Eckerd $17k merit etc. The two concerns are no Education minor at Eckerd and the higher than average in state % at Flagler. But upon reflection, we see that a Flagler student coming from Miami is coming further than a student from SC, GA, etc. We figured that Eckerd was about 10k more overall but that is what the 529 and loads of college pre-planning is for :)

My son looked at Flagler before deciding to attend Eckerd and my daughter also graduated from Eckerd with a degree in marine science with a biology concentration. Flager does not offer marine science and Eckerd does not offer education, (Eckerd has a large number of Ford Apprentice Scholars that prepare a student to persue grad school work and prepare them to teach at the college level). At Eckerd, the average distance that students travel from home is nearly 1,000 miles and come from 44 states and 33 countries. Eckerd has the largest number of Hollings Scholars, (NOAA), in the country. Students are mentored by a professor who engages them in research as early as freshman year. All students are required to complete at least 1 internship and a senior project prior to graduation. The research opportunities on campus and abroad are amazing. Take a look at their website. Feel free to PM me for any info. We are big supporters of Eckerd! Best of luck to your daughter.

Have you looked into the requirements for teacher certification? In some states, they are not onerous and can be added to a liberal arts program through summer work or one extra year of school. You can also call Eckerd and ask about resources for future teachers. I doubt this is the first time the question has come up.

thanks ECmotherx2… I have been holding off contacting you directly so I appreciate your response. We absolutely agree with the fabulous Marine program at Eckerd and planned to contact the school to see how other students with teaching aspirations were handling it. We have visited Flagler several times including spring break with a nice sit down with admin and professors. Their Environmental Environmental Science is of interest to DD. At the time Eckerd and Stetson were not on our radar so we missed the chance to visit. We live in Europe so we have agreed that when the acceptance letters and FA packages come in, we will plan a visit to the finalist colleges if needed. Thanks again for sharing your insider info.
