Ecology Undergrad?

My son is interested in attending Georgia and majoring in Ecology. I see from the website that there are only about 80 undergrads in the Ecology Program. Is there a reason it is so small, especially for such a large university? I love the idea of a small program with associated close contact with professors. Anybody out there with any feedback?

The Odum School of Ecology is the first standalone school of ecology in the world. Many universities have departments of ecology and schools that focus on the broader field of environmental studies, but the Odum School is the only one specifically independently devoted to ecology. The Odum School will immediately be recognized as one of the nation’s top research programs in ecological sciences based on the strength of its faculty, reputation of its degree programs and international stature.

I’ve heard good things about Odum.

Five UGA faculty members were named AAAS Fellows this year and one of them was Dr. Lisa Alayne Donovan, professor of plant biology. Just this year UGA became the 78th member of UCAR for it’s growing reputation in atmospheric and related science. Seven eminent scientists with ties to the University of Georgia-six of whom are affiliated with the Odum School of Ecology-have been named to the inaugural list of Fellows of the Ecological Society of America.

The size of the program allows for more 1:1 student interaction. I can’t comment on the size, but my guess would be that not many people major in ecology. I’m glad more people are taking interest in geology and ecology. People don’t realize how important these fields will be in the very near future. The nature of ecology study is probably such that you don’t want lecture halls as you usually have for freshman science and business courses.

Tell your son to check out UGA at Costa Rica. My daughter majored in pre-med chemistry but spent a summer at the Costa Rica summer research facility. She loved it!

Thanks. If there are and past, present, or future Ecology majors I would love to hear from you also.

I’m not sure if the ecology students will work at Skidaway, but UGA will be acquiring the 700 acre Skidaway Institute of Oceanography in 2013. Skidaway is a standalone research facility in Savannah, Georgia.

jm2871 you might want to take a look at this. It was just announced today. Study abroad is great for ecology and environmental engineering/environmental science majors.
