<p>My daughter (currently a freshman) is considering taking Econ 201 at our local community college this summer in order to get an i-core pre req out of the way. Is that a good idea, or is there a reason it would be better for her to take it at IU?</p>

<p>I think your daughter is a direct admit to Kelley? A lot of direct admits take some of the harder grading I-core pre-reqs at cc in the summer, like microeconomics, finite, calculus, business law, macroeconomics (required to graduate) and some 27 credit hour core classes that will transfer, then take only 12 hours or so during the fall and spring semesters to keep their gpa’s high.

<p>Thanks, bthomp. We’re just starting to catch on to how this all works. Yes, she is a direct admit and in hindsight she probably should have taken Calculus over the summer. Finite wasn’t a problem first semester, but Calc has been more challenging than expected. She’d like to get some icore prereqs done to lighten the load next year – has taken 15 credits both semesters this year. Looks like micro-econ will be the one to check off this summer.</p>

<p>What you take and when depends a lot on your goals. My son is an in-state accounting major who wants to get 150 hours as an undergrad, but took no APs in high school (did take W131 in hs thru IU). So he is taking a lot of summer classes at Ivy Tech (finite, bus law, micro, macro, astronomy for A&H class) and IUPUI (A100, E270) to keep three-credit classes to only four per semester (just five three-credit classes at IU can be stressful) at fall and spring at IU (along with some easy grading or Pass/Fail one and two credit classes at IU). He will have 97 credits before starting I-Core in fall of junior year, so he will have relatively light junior and sr year loads of 300-400 business classes and graduate in four years with acct/finance majors. His IU gpa is high, and he will have a good gpa buffer when the hard grading upper level accounting/finance classes start, and he has taken a lot of honors business classes (k204, x202, a205, a207). The classes he takes at cc are taught in huge IU classes, so I doubt the professors at IU are offering a huge difference compared to the very small (15-25 students) Ivy Tech classes and IUPUI (about 50 students) classes.</p>

<p>no, unless you are taking icore prereqs the summer before fall i-core starts. However, you should check online to make sure the credit transfers.</p>

<p>bthomp1 provided a lot of useful links above – in terms of figuring out which courses transfer, use the Credit Transfer Service link. It shows you which classes are accepted from a given institution. If a course is not listed, I think you can still take it at a different school and try to petition Indiana to accept it.</p>
<p>Additionally, I do not know Indiana’s definitive stance on this, but I would shy away from online courses. Many community colleges are beginning to offer summer courses online, and while I did not see anything explicitly from Indiana discouraging kids from taking summer courses online, I did notice when I went to apply for study abroad and I-CORE that there was a disclaimer about not accepting online courses. So consider them at your own risk.</p>
<p>The best I-CORE prereqs to take outside of Indiana would be anything that counts for A201, A202, E201, or M119. The sophomore accounting classes are pretty tough, and E201 is one of the freshman business “weed-out” courses; I took AP Microeconomics in high school (didn’t take the AP exam), and I still thought E201 was pretty difficult at Indiana.</p>
<p>One thing I would STRONGLY advise those of you who have kids at Indiana is to pursue an alternate to ECON-E370; I do not think Indiana accepts a lot of transferable courses from other colleges, and E370 is FAR AND AWAY the hardest I-CORE prereq. The workload is pretty extensive compared to the other prereqs; a lot of studying/outside reading has to be done to keep up with the course, and I have heard nothing but negative things about the teacher (lecturer, not the lab leaders). Kelley offers a list of alternatives one can take at Indiana that will count in place of E370, but a lot of students do not realize this (Kelley keeps this info relatively ‘unavailable’). Though there are students who certainly do well in E370, I have found the majority of my peers complaining about the difficulty/workload of that course in particular. If they’re already in Kelley, tell them to make their lives easier – take an alternate (I took MATH-K310 instead of E370).</p>
<p>Any questions, feel free to PM me. I don’t check this site often, but I have been a bit disappointed by some of the inaccurate information flowing around, regarding Indiana in particular. It seems to me as though many of the ‘hear-say’ and rumors some of the students are hearing and relaying to their parents are, for the most part, inaccurate or unfounded.</p>

<p>Micro depends a lot on the teacher, but if you’re already admitted into Kelley and don’t mind taking it over the summer, you may as well not put your GPA at risk.</p>
<p>Macro, on the other hand, is not overly difficult at Indiana. I would take care of that one here (you have to take E201 first).</p>
<p>Business law is VERY teacher dependent – I am enrolled in it now, and I have a great teacher (it is not easy, but not particularly difficult). One of my roommates took it last semester with a grad student teaching, and finished with a C-. His quizzes and tests have had almost no similarity to mine so far when I’ve compared them. This is a course where using the Grade Distribution Database off of the Registrar website can be really helpful.</p>
<p>Tulare–am I correct in remembering that your D is now part of the Hutton Honors College?</p>
<p>D took the microecon class as an honors course. The professor was fantastic and was very helpful. If that’s a possibility, she might consider doing that and taking a different course over the summer. </p>
<p>BTW–my D would happily take the calc class for your D, if your D wanted to do her finite course. Calc is relatively easy for her. Finite-she’s catching on now, but there was some confusion the first couple of weeks. (joking here–there will be no switching of classes by two young women that probably don’t know one another)</p>
<p>E270 at IUPUI will substitute for E370. You can even find online lectures to use for review.</p>

<p>These really are great info! I got the habit of checking CC everyday for my kids. It is fun and makes me feel like I am going to IU myself. Also, I think that it is a good way to keep a close relationship with my kids when they go to IU. They will be surprised by the tricks I have learned from here.</p>
<p>Anyways, my kids’ HS has a system where parents can check their grades on-line. When the Stock Market has a big down day, that is where I can look for some consolation. Can I do the same (just checking the grades; not sure about the consolation part) when they go to IU?</p>

<p>I’d take E201, although the lower your math SAT or SAT II score, the more sense it makes to take the Finite course over the summer instead.</p>
<p>I see Solid Snake and I posted essentially the same thing at the exact same time–so the advise probably makes sense.</p>
