Econ? Actuarial Science?

Hi I'm interested in majoring in either economics or actuarial science.
But the thing is I don't really know what those majors will do in the future exactly.
I know that economics with BA can go anywhere in the business world but I want to pursue MD right after so that I can be an economist. What do economist REALLY do?? What does their job look like?

On the other hand for actuarial science? In college, what exactly do you study? Where do you usually go for after graduation with BA? Insurance companies? Do they get MD or PhD?

This may be simple questions that I can get from online but I want an answer from someone who can actually answer my question.

Lastly, what are some good economics/actuarial science? I live in PA, not aiming for any ivy leagues since my grades won't support it. My GPA (Unweighted) is 3.6 and 1850 on my SAT (550 CR, 750 Math, 550 WR). I heard that PSU has an excellent program for both majors. Any other colleges that are good for either majors?

What all other PhDs do. They research and teach classes.

If you’re asking what economists in industry do, well, the answer can be as diverse as the fields that economists can go into (answer: all of them) but, if it involves working in an office, they’re likely to be paper pushers.

There’s actually not that much diversity in the corporate world.

Mm alright. Um thinking about either doing financial economics or international. Thanks!

I have to ask… have you actually done any research on the actuarial science major/profession? If not I HIGHLY recommend checking out beanactuary.com as it has most information you’ll need.

There are several tests you have to take, very similar to the bar, except there are LOTS of them. They go from financial mathematics to economics. You will need to take and pass these to get hired. All job/intern offers I’ve seen have required at least one. The curriculum essentially is that: classes which prepare you for the tests, and their prereqs. There are also classes which help you with the skills you’ll need. For example, actuaries have to be good with computers, and especially Excel. So for my school, we take a class called “Programming for Actuaries” which essentially teaches us the skills we need for that. There are also things called VEEs which you earn in school by taking specific classes approved by the Society of Actuaries, and getting above a B-. So for example, to get your VEE in Economics, you must get a B- or higher in both macro and micro economics.

Actuarial science is a 4 year program. No need to continue after that. A BA will almost certainly get you a job, assuming you’ve got a decent GPA and exams passed.

I’m an actuarial science student. It’s a very lucrative career if you stick with it. It’s been rated the 2nd best job, and according to those news articles about top 10 college majors, it has a 0% unemployment rate for graduates. (Sources: [The 14 Most Employable Majors](<a href=“HuffPost - Breaking News, U.S. and World News | HuffPost”>The 14 Most Employable Majors | HuffPost College) and [The 10 college majors with the lowest unemployment rates | The Lookout - Yahoo! News](<a href=“The 10 college majors with the lowest unemployment rates”>The 10 college majors with the lowest unemployment rates) )

For school options, again, I’m led to believe you haven’t actually done any research.
There is a list of every school with the actuarial program, which ones are centers of actuarial excellence, and how in depth their program actually is.

Wow, thank you SO much.
Although I did went on that site, your info was much more helpful. I got A- for AP microeconomics and I’m hoping to get at least 4 on the exam… Mm sounds like a solid major, thanks again!

No problem! If you have any questions about that major feel free to send me a PM!
