Hey just wondering what current econ majors at Cal think of the econ department? I've heard before that it's a "mess" but then again I've heard the same with UCLA's econ department.

I'm in econ. Depends on what you mean by "a mess." The application process is clear, pre-reqs are clear, graduation reqs are clear, advisor has office hours 4 days a week. I had some difficulty getting a math class to transfer, but after that got worked out everything was smooth. The only thing I would improve is having more micro-economic based classes. A lot of the classes are more macro based. Hope that helps.

what do you mean, the econ dept is a mess? what exactly did you "hear" about econ and from whom? it's an impacted major and econ classes fill up quickly, but as startracksfinest said, everything is very clear.

Econ 1, 100a, amd 100b are quite big and are filled with a lot of non-majors so i guess its possible to perceive it as a mess. And I heard some of the upperdivs aren't organized so well (I heard this about labor econ, metrics, and game theory in social sciences).
