I am wanting to major in Econ and am trying to decide between NCSU and UNC.
At NCSU Econ major is in the Poole College of Business and Management
At UNC Econ is in the soical sciences department and not in Keegan-Fletcher.

Any econ students here? What are the advantages/disadvantages of econ at UNC? Good job placement/interns/graduate schools?

Thank you for any info

Firstly-- I would only recommend State to students if they were dead-set on engineering, but since you’re not, UNC would be my default rec.

Anyway, from my experience, I love the UNC econ department. Only disadvantages that I can think of are that you might have to more actively seek out the math-heavy econ if that’s what you’re looking for. I wanted to do more of a behavioral econ route and that is totally doable within the dept. I’d also recommend that if you want to do econ for grad school, you should double major or at least minor in Mathematics, because once you get to the grad school level, it’s very very heavily focused on math (well, most top-ranked programs seem to be, anyway). I’d recommend double majoring in Math if you went to State, too.

I don’t really know anything about the State program, but I would absolutely recommend UNC. Feel free to ask me any more questions!

Thanks.

How much does the department help you with internships or allow you to do undergrad research?

Undergrad research is its own department at UNC–you’d probably go to them for resources/support. You’re going to have to seek out your own internships here unless a professor happens to know of one they’d like to recommend you for. I’m not really sure what you’re asking here. It’s not like they’re going to offer these opportunities to you on a silver platter, but if you want to do research or get an internship, you’re going to have to do the legwork yourself. I can’t imagine that this would be any different at State.
