Econ department says you need an overall 3.9 gpa to get into it

I guess that's for transfer students, and that's what I will be. In an email, they said that if one wants to transfer to any major in the econ department, then they must have at least an overall 3.9 gpa.

Is there truth to that? Does anyone have any experiences?

Thanks in advance

Wow, that's outrageous. I'm an econ major with a 3.23 overall.

The econ major at UCLA is overrated anyway...

I'm not sure about the validity of that, but the average GPA of transfer admits into BusEcon and Econ were both like 3.82 for 2008.

3.9 is a gross overestimate...

Oops.. let me clear something up. What I mean is that I was accepted into the math department and I am going to UCLA. In order for me to switch into the Econ department, it's required that I have an overall 3.9 gpa.

From an email I received:
"You are unable to switch into a Dept of Economics major unless you have a 3.9 GPA and have finished all the coursework that students transferring into the program have comepleted by this Spring."

I wouldn't doubt it that much, then... econ's an impact major, and according the website, the "number of applicants greatly exceeds the number of available spots".
