do the math classes factor into your major gpa? im in econ 1 right now and have an A, but it looks like ill be getting a C in math 114. Do you know if i could take the math class over to improve my major gpa?

you can't retake a class unless you failed (meaning f) and even then, the old grade will not be removed from your transcript

As far as I know, only econ classes would count towards the major gpa (although I haven't seen a definition of "major gpa" anywhere). But say, for getting into the Honors course (Econ 300), all that counts is the econ courses.

Even if it doesn't count towards an ostensible "major gpa," economics and maths are so intertwined that math classes are just as important as your economics classes. If you're looking at grad schools, your math classes will most likely be looked at more than any other subject.

The only times anyone has ever asked me for my "in-major" GPA, it has been self-reported. ie, I got to choose what to report, since Penn doesn't really have a calculation for it.

More relevantly, grad schools and employers ask for transcripts, where they'll look at every course and grade you took. People who care that you studied Econ will care about what you got in math classes. And no, you can't take it over again unless you get an F.

so grad schools really look at what you got first semester of your freshman year? wow. do you think i could retake it sometime over the summer just to demonstrate my ability and that would make a difference? i was going through some difficult times when my grade started going down hill and im sure if i took this class again i could get an A. Even if it wont calculate into my gpa, do you think its a good idea to show i can do it (for grad school purposes)?

No it's not a good idea. Anyone can get an A in a class if you take it multiple times. Yes, grad schools look at the entire transcript, but they will put more focus on junior/senior courses, and especially math and econ courses. If you've gotten low grades now, then the best thing you can do is take harder classes in math and econ and get good grades there.
