Hey all,

I'm an incoming freshman planning on majoring in economics, but I'm not quite sure what I want to minor in.

I like the idea of minoring in finance- is that possible? I know that you can do the opposite- Major in Finance w/Econ minor. If not, I'm considering gov, philosophy, psych, or sociology.

For now, I'm thinking about going to law school afterward to pursue a J.D. but if not, I could always work after graduating and later get an MBA.

My main question is if it would be possible to major in econ & minor in finance. I know that McCombs has many guidelines/restrictions that deal with majors/minors. Also, if you have any advice/suggestions/comments for an incoming econ major, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I don’t think you can minor in finance. McCombs does offer a “Business Foundations” program for non-business majors which includes finance classes.

[Business Foundations for non-business majors | McCombs School of Business | The University of Texas at Austin](Business Minor Options | Programs | McCombs School of Business)

I think the Business Economics Option might be a better choice than Business Foundations if you’re an economics major, since you take the actual courses that business majors take and not just the “foundations” ones: [Business Economics Option](<a href=“Economics | Liberal Arts | UT - Austin”>Economics | Liberal Arts | UT - Austin)

Edit: I just read the whole page, you have to have taken ECO 420K (and thus two semesters of calculus and macro and microeconomics) to apply. However, you’ll be taking those classes anyway, so it still might be a good option for later on if you’re really interested in a finance minor.
