Econ: Northwestern or U of Warwick?

I got admission at Northwestern CAS and at U of Warwick in England (for econ). Warwick econ is ranked 2 and 4 by well The Guardian and the Times, and NU is ranked well I have heard. Which should I choose? I also want to try a transfer out to Wharton (which I applied to this year and got rejected from). Considering this, would it be better for me to go to England or the US? Thanks!

I bet that's 2nd/4th in England only, right?

yes...only in england

id most likely go to northwestern

Northwestern by a mile :)

northwestern : )

I am very familiar with British Universities and Warwick is truly excellent...but I would also recommend Northwestern.

lol..i am glad Alexandre is here since if you ask just american students, the opinion may be biased since the assumption that US schools are the best is fairly prevalent.

Yea Northwestern

Thanks guys! Alexandre, what are the reasons you would choose northwestern over warwick for econ?

I have two major reasons. First, Northwestern is a better university overall. Secondly, Warwick, like most British universities, is much less endowed that Northwestern. Northwestern's endowment per student is $300,000. Warwick's is under $10,000. That's 30 to 1! That's too large a difference to ignore.

So how does the endowment make a real difference to a student's life and education? Is it the quality of surroundings...teachers or what?

Another question...is it easier to transfer into a place like Brown, Columbia, Wharton@Penn or any other top school from Warwick or NU? Also, what are the returns like from both places in terms of salaries?

Transfering from NU to Brown, Penn or Columbia would be a lateral movement. Why do it?

Really? I would have guessed there would be more opportunities at a place like Columbia or Penn.

How is Wharton on the same level as NU? CAS definitely might be on the same level, i think. Also, I know several people over there so it seems a good option to me. I guess the other ones are lateral.

Alexandre, you had mentioned about the importance of endowment per student. In what spheres does it make a difference? Academic? General lifestyle? Teaching quality?

Yeah same question here

bump.......

bump.............

Callthecops, what do you want to know? A university can only spend as much money as it's got. A school with an endowment of $4 billion (like Northwestern), can spend $200 million annually on faculty, facilities maintenance etc... A schools that has an endowment of $200 million (like Warwick), can only spend $10 million annually on faculty and facilities maintenance. That's a pretty steep difference. Think of how many moreprofessors you can have on your payroll or how much maintenance work you can do on facilities with that $190 million!

As for Northwestern, it is on par with Brown, Columbia and Penn. Wharton is a different type of program because it is so focused, but that does not make it better than the other programs listed above.
