ECON: Northwestern vs. NYU

I know that Northwestern has a really good economics department and overall, the school is pretty good with academics. But if you were to compare Northwestern's econ department with NYU's econ department, put aside the rankings (i've heard that nyu's usually higher than northwestern's) which one would you choose?? Both of them are good... i can't really decide whice one. Thanks!

Northwestern is consistently ranked higher than NYU for economics.

And for the record, I would choose Northwestern.

Edit: I just realized you might have meant higher as in worse, if so, forget the first line.

If you want to know which is the better school and has the better reputation in terms of an undergraduate education, the answer is clear: Northwestern.
But that should not be the end of the inquiry. Do you like one school more than the other for your own, purely subjective reasons?
Keep in mind that the schools’ respective atmospheres, campuses (which NYU doesn’t really have), social life, etc. are completely different. NU offers the more classic college experience. NYU is a fine university that uses its very distinctive neighborhood in Manhattan in lieu of the traditional “campus.”
If a person had a very strong preference for NYU for his/her own reasons, then that would be the place to go. All other things being equal, however, I would strongly recommend NU over NYU. I think it’s a no-brainer.

I actually had to make this same decision. I was on the waitlist at NU and had put down my deposit for Stern, where I was probably going to major in Econ or Finance. When I got off the wait list at NU, I decided to go there instead.

My reasons for the choice were threefold. The financial aid at Northwestern was better, I am not a huge fan of New York City/was looking for a more traditional college environment, and Northwestern has D1 sports teams.

If you are a big fan of the city, financial aid isn’t a real concern (NYU grads have the second most student loans of all colleges) and the other things fit, then NYU probably would be fine for you. However, all of my preferences made NU the best fit for me.

Thank you all! actually, I’ve been put on NU’s waiting list and decided not to go to NYU which offers me almost zero financial aid. I’ll just wait for NU…
