Econ or Accounting

I currently go to Purdue University and I am not sure whether or not I should major in Economics or Accounting? I've heard many people say that I shouldn't take economics unless I am in a really good school or else it would be useless. Can you guys give me some suggestions?

What is your prospective profession?

Begin my career as a Financial Analyst.... then eventually i'll start my own business.

Do you plan on getting an MBA?

Yes, I do plan on getting an MBA.

if i were you i would go with accounting! every body needs an accountant! and they make very good money...at least if you own your own bussiness and are a CPA! accounting is such a carrer oriented major! it would give you the most job options! their are some many places (like finance places, TV studios, banks ect.) that need accountant! and your friends were right! unless you go to a top 25 schoo...dont major in economis it is VERY useless!

top 25 as in top 25 schools or top 25 econ programs in schools?

Accounting is more along the lines of starting a company but I suppose it doesn't matter that much

Accounting or Economic.... which degree has more earning potential?

To my knowledge, on a spectrum this is how it goes...

Economics | Finance | Accounting

Accounting is the most "practical" of the majors and economics is the most "theoretical" I guess you could say, and Finance is in the middle. I dislike economics and I love accounting, so that is what I would go with. Also accountants are always in demand, economics I'm not so sure about.

As you can see by the national average, accounting has a slight edge on potential.

accounting is very very useful when it comes to financial advisory positions....In order to interpret economical transactions, you must be very very fluent with all kinds of financial statements.

major in both.

My mom got her degree in Accounting 25 years ago and she has had a great career as a CPA. Interesting jobs and has traveled all over the world. Her education and training have allowed her to go into different fields from the electronics and computer fields to the entertainment industry. She's knows computers inside and out and handles investment portfolios. You can't go wrong with accounting. I wish it appealed to me.

Accounting is a hard major, but one that has proven OVER and OVER again that it is practical (accountants are required regardless of economic conditions), versatile (you can work in any industry), and well worth it ($$$$).

accounting would work best in your favor.

what is the most effective way to use the accounting degree to earn good $$$?

Some people do TA, and make pretty good money that way.

NYC87, the list is very long, but here's a few:

get a CPA license and do management consulting, work your way up to manager or even partner in big 4 firm, do specialized forensic accounting (I've heard that some law firms will pay prime dollar for good forensic accountants willing to be expert witnesses), use your knowledge to make smart investments and be an entrepreneur, etc, etc, etc.
