Econ/Poli Sci @ Amherst?

So, I’m considering transferring to Amherst (dream school) from UNC (hate it). I’m pretty sure I’d stand a decent chance at admissions, but the problem is that my interests are in International Relations/Economics, and my parents won’t pay the $50,000 a year unless they feel that what Amherst offers is superior to my present institution. Can anyone comment on the aforementioned programs? I’m specifically looking for China-US foreign relations. Thanks.

Im pretty sure we lack an international relations major.

However, the econ department is really good here, coming from an Econ major himself. Very good professors.

I'm sorry I don't have any hardcore statistics for you. Wish I could help more.

There is no IR major, but you can get an IR certificate through the 5-college consortium by taking certain classes throughout the 5 colleges. That said, the econ. and poli sci departments at amherst are very strong, and are usually among the most popular majors.

There is an IR program offered through the 5-college system. The problem is that the focus what you're interested in is, sadly, not at all strong around here. In fact, we don't even have a PS professor who specializes in Asian politics, let alone China. If you're interested in other aspects of PS such as public law, american politics, european/latin american politics, Amherst will not fail your expectation.

If you really know what you want to major and your majors matter a lot to you, I think with that combo, U Chicago/Dartmouth or Cornell are some excellent choices.
