How much of a blow will it be to not have all of the calculus requirements completed by the end of spring? I ask because for most of the schools I can take calculus for social sciences 1&2 which does not require me to take a semester of trig. But ALL school accept calculus 1&2 which does require a semester of trig. So I can either take the social science calculus and finish both by the time I'm going to transfer OR take regular calculus and only finish one of two. I plan on applying to Cal, UCLA and tagging to UCSD for Econ which is impacted everywhere! So I know every little thing counts. I'm just curious as to how much?

Which schools won’t take the S.S. Calculus?

I would say a big blow for Econ major to not have cals series finished, prefer regular calculus for flexibility. It would be must easier to have the knowledge for upper division courses.

You won’t get accepted with social science calculus if applying to UCLA or UCSD econ.

Also, if you want to go to graduate school in economics, you want to take math-major calculus, multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations.

@LAforlife - UCLA will not take social science calculus.

@larinaga - Why do you say that using social science calculus will cause UCSD to reject? Is this speculation you’ve developed or is there proof to your statement? If they did not accept it why list it on assist?

@ucbalumnus - Thank you for that bit of information. Though grad school in economics is not at all any part of my plans.

^If UCLA doesn’t take it, it’s highly unlikely you would be accepted there.Would taking the class in Winter help, or is Winter already a part of your timeline?

Yes UCSD does accept Calculus for social science and no you do not have to have it completed prior to transfer but they highly recommend it. The reason being, all the core econ classes require at least Math 10C to be done. Also Econ at UCSD is not impacted.

If you decide to take normal calculus for Management Science you need Math 20A-20F(theres no 20D) but you only need up to Math 20C for some core classes.

The way its structured, at least my CC is:

Math 20A = Math 30
Math 20B = Math 31
Math 20C = Math 32
Math 20F = Math 31 + 33 (so Math 33)

I don’t know how it is structured in regards to calc 1 & 2 but I highly recommend having at least the equivalent of Math 20C done. I think that would be Calc 1 and 2 but I don’t know.

Also I emailed the advisor and he said you can take a math course in summer @ UCSD prior to transfer if you are missing one. This is my plan as I am missing the equivalent to Math 10B/10C so I might take 10B in the summer and fall semester 10C with Econ 2 or some electives. This is all hypothetical of course.

Your counselor will know a lot, try checking with him/her.
