I know you're probably sick with all these threads about people not knowing where to SIR to, but I'm now officially stuck. I'm currently a Business Econ major at UCI and I really don't know why I chose to attend here out of HS. I'm originally from northern california, so I think I want to stay there, but I'm not COMPLETELY against staying in socal for 2 more years.

I'm thinking about: UCSD (economics), UCD (Managerial Economics), USC (Business but might switch to Econ).

So far how I see it:
Pros (UCSD)- higher ranking, good econ program, and I think I would be happier knowing I graduated from UCSD. Cons - I don't like SD area that much, haven't really visited campus (little late- I know), not sure if I'd be happy living there for 2 years.

UCD Pros- I love the campus and the people/environment, heard their managerial econ program has pretty good recruitment, I know I'll be happy here for 2 years. Cons - Little bit lower rank, kind of bummed students CC students can easily transfer here.

USC Pros: Excellent job placement/networking/alumni, good ranking. Cons - MONEY. My parents make close to $150,000, so I don't qualify for anything and I don't want them to pay that much for my tuition.

So it's basically UCSD vs UCD. Any tips? :)

“kind of bummed students CC students can easily transfer here.” oh yes i’m sure that deteriorates the quality of the program so much. if anything, at least you’ll get better grades in all your classes than us lowly cc transfers.

but anyways, i was in the same dilemma and chose davis for pretty much the same reasons. and if you’re an econ major you’ll most likely be going to grad school, so the prestige of the undergrad school won’t make or break the rest of your life. -__-

Little bit of a low blow on my part, so sorry about that. Just mentioned that because I have a friend who had a 2.0 in hs and a 2.9 in CC and he got admitted to Davis. I also know many people who had pretty low stats and got in as well. Of course that doesn’t deteriorate the program or anything, but it does have some small kick when you realize that people got in pretty easily. Then again, if they try to slack off as they did in CC… it will end up worse at a UC.

Don’t get me wrong, UCD is still one of my top choices and I will probably end up there. I just wanted to know what people think about UCD vs UCSD (especially for econ).

I do see what you are saying about how it sucks that ppl with a 2.9 can get into a top 50 school. But keep in mind UCSD admits almost everyone as well.

I wouldn’t go to USC unless your parents can afford it. I have heard of the strong alumni connections, especially in a major like Econ, but $50k per year is a hefty price.

Between UCSD and UCD, I think you should go where you will be happy. UCSD supposedly has a very good Econ program (tied with UCLA) and a fantastic Econometrics program (tied with Berkeley). UCD’s program is not quite as established it would seem, but I believe it still gets recruited well and the school overall is on the same level as UCSD.

Ehh, kinda agree with the comment from nothingatalll about Davis.

I’m a 3.7 CC transfer and I’m debating between Davis for Managerial Econ and UCSD Econ…From what I know, if you’re leaning towards a more Business major, then go for Davis. You’ll get Finance and diff Management classes I believe. Econ is a top major at UCSD, but it’s strictly Econ.

From the sounds of it, Davis sounds like a good fit for you. But gee, yea, sorry us transfer students will ruin the prestige. Some of us actually DO work hard ya know…
But still, I know what you mean about the getting in Davis with a 2.0 thing. Makes me feel discredited too!

I exactly know what you’re talking about. UCD is a great school and it’s always an honor to get into the school out of hs. I’ve had friends get rejected with a 4.1 to UCD out of hs and they had to settle with going to UCI or UCSC. Then comes CC and they can just TAG their way in with ~3.0. But that shouldn’t really defer your judgement, because I also know people who got in with 3.8’s and one even chose it over Berkeley.

Just look at it this way: You attended UCI for 2 years and now you’re going to attend another great UC for about 2 more years. You will get a degree and nobody can really judge your grades because you did technically attend a UC for all 4 years. Also getting the cool “Whoa, you can transfer from another UC?” is always an interesting conversation piece.

If I were in your case, I’d go to UCD if you know you will be happy there. UCSD is a great school for economics, but that pretty much means nothing if you aren’t happy in your classes/doing well in them. I know when I got accepted to UCSD I kind of just tossed that admission packet to the side Then again, it’s probably because of the reasons you listed.

I think if I actually did attend UCSD, then I would actually major in Management Science because I don’t think I want a degree in pure economics. So it’s kind of Managerial Econ vs Management Science.

So does anyone know about any specifics about the Management Science program? I mostly only hear about regular economics at UCSD. Otherwise, THANKS for all the comments. It’s really great to hear these tips because it’s hard to find other people at UCI who are trying to transfer as well.

Not to sound like an echo, but go where you are happier for two reasons.
You will be happier and in turn do better in school
Undergraduate rankings will not make a profound difference in your education, at most it will be a few additional theories or one more math class.

taking a more math heavy major(managerial science, quantitative eocnomics, etc.) will help for grad school admissions.

I’d probably be a prestige whore and go for UCSD myself assuming costs are basically the same among campuses, but that said UCD is a nice school environment and isn’t too far behind UCSD in econ rankings.

Personally, I’ve never visited SD(so i have no opinions on there) but UCD is a great school for the managerial econ. I know its a very good major and I believe it’s competitive as well, I’m going to be an incoming Freshmen and not a transfer :(, so my opinion might not matter too much since I’m not in ur shoes <.<. Also I didn’t get in both <.<. I think UCD is a great choice to have. Although to be honest transferring from UCI to UCD to other people may look like a (HUH!?) move since their overall rank is pretty much the same.

I dont like USC so thats out of the question and it costs too much so w.e :). Personally I prefer to go to UCSD, since it’s well yes a better ranked school, and their economic program is supposedly really good. I’m from Norcal and I guess I want to use w.e excuse I can to go to SoCal so guess my opinion is skewed. Although you can’t go wrong with both, since their ranking isnt even that much different.

Even though the rankings r pretty similar, people will always clump u with the “high tier” UC (UCSD) or “mid tier” UC (UCD), so they will judge you differently. Just bear that in mind.

Just because you’re a Lebron fan, I’m not going to help you.
I keed, I keed.
SD has really nice weather, so you’re guaranteed to like it there; whereas Davis is plain boring and has pretty much nothing. All you have are cows! Imagine that.

Also, I got the UCD info from others. I have visited SD before, so yea. Man, it was really nice. That summer was a boss.

Davis is great… was definitely a hard choice for me between it and Cal. UCSD, on the other hand, it the epitome of boring. It is probably not a good idea to base your opinion on a school off of what others have told you. Different strokes for different folks. Some love the suburbs, others don’t.

Makin it rain,
you said, “I don’t even think PRESTIGE can come into play when it comes to UCSD and UC Davis at all. Seriously now…” That is not true. UCSD has more prestige than UCD. I’m not here to talk about prestige this and that, so please reckon that I’m proving that you’re wrong.

Hmm. Well, as far as the social scenes of the schools, UCSD is called UC Socially Dead for a reason. I used to live just a mile from UCSD when I went to La Jolla HS, and although it is really beautiful, there didn’t seem to be much life there. San Diego in general always seemed like a giant suburb when I was growing up there, but maybe that’s just me.

Anyway, you’re probably going to grad school, so I’d say UCD since you would probably have an easier time of getting a high GPA. I’m biased though since I already picked Davis =]

Honestly ur gonna look like an idiot if you transfer from UCI to UCD since theyre almost exactly the same ranking. Most people would want to transfer up and for you UCSD is the option that you have so unless u really cant stand UCSD, I’d say go to UCSD since ur only gonna be there for 2 years anyways -.-
