How is the economics major in CMU, comparing with Tufts? Can students transfer to Tepper?

I say go to Tufts. I’m currently a sophomore at CMU and I was an econ major. Let’s just say after a year and a half I realized how bad the program was and switched majors. The advisors keep changing and so do the teachers…just not a good situation. In my opinion econ isn’t that great here, most of the teachers I’ve had are foreign and are hard to understand at times (but thats not a major concern). Classes are uninspiring and its common that for a class that has 150 students enrolled, that after the first month, people stop going to class and figure they can just look at the powerpoint slides on the course website to study. Its easy to switch majors here; im not really sure what the requirements are to get into Tepper, but im sure its not that big of a deal especially when alot of the econ classes are prerequisites for the business major. Feel free to ask any other questions! Hope I helped.

Hmm, so is Econ too easy you think? Is the focus on “applications” and math-centricity (sp?) of the program a negative, you think? Do most people agree with you? And is this reflective of the rest of H&SS? (Note: These are all qualities of the program as described by the Director of undergrad econ, Carol Goldburg, on one of the accepted student days. She seemed very caring and knowledgeable and honest, and she actually increased my view of the program. From what she said, pretty much all of the econ students end up doing what they want to be.)

Sorry to ask so many questions. I’m definitely studying Econ and deciding between CMU, BC, and William & Mary and your post just raised a lot of red flags haha.

I was at the COD weekend and spoke to many current Econ students and also sat in a Intro to Econ class.

The class was kinda boring since i took Micro/Macro in high school , but all the students seemed like they liked the program.
Also , the avg salary seems pretty high for Econ majors. I also saw that many people end up were they wanted to be after graduating in Econ from CMU

I committed today to CMU , and will be doing Econ/Finance.

Uninspiring? Hmm take 73-100 principles of economics with Stephen Klepper during fall semester and then talk about uninspiring. This class is infamously hard, but you come out amazed every lecture. Probably one of the few classes in CMU that has high lecture attendence %

I thought Klepper’s class was pretty easy. Hardest part is not writing down one of the data tables incorrectly, then having it show up on the final and instantly losing 40% of your grade because most of the test was based off of it. Somehow managed to drag my mid-A down to a high B with that one mistake.
