Econ undergrad looking to go back to school... Help needed

Hey everyone,

I think I'm ready to finally go back to school. It's something I've wanted to do since undergrad, but I wanted to pay off some of my loans first and get a glimpse of the working world (still have around $27k worth of debt, but oh well).

I did my undergrad in Economics, but have not used my degree since graduation. I work in healthcare, and I'm not really crazy about my job. I've spent a few years here and i can't seem to reposition mysel for a job I actually want now.

I'm pretty lost on the whole grad school process though. First off, I don't want to go back to school, graduate and end up in the same spot I'm in now, so I've been searching or degrees that will actually help me advance in the working world. I've considered going back to Econ, Statistics, or Computer Science. I don't really want to do research and would prefer being in the private sector or working for the government. If I did computer science, I assume I'd have to take several undergrad classes before any schools would even look at me since my experience there ends at some teaching myself a little programming.

Can anyone provide some tips? Maybe some insight on what these different programs would offer in terms of occupations?

Thanks everyone!

What was your undergrad GPA?

If you go back to school for a computer science degree after getting your bachelors in econ, you are probably going to have to reapply as an undergrad and get a second bachelors degree in computer science. If you go that route, I’d recommend looking at your local community college and see if they teach computer science classes (i.e. C++ and Java). Try to get all lower-division classes out of the way there, so that you can start as a junior at a four-year institution.

In the meantime, throw everything you have left over at the end of each month at your student loans so that you have very little (if any) debt when you go back.
