I will be starting college as a freshman this fall at UF and I have been considering majoring in either economics or finance. I've been told by some that finance is the better major because it's more applicable than economics. Despite this, I've looked all over the internet and it seems as though the prospects for econ majors are great. But as I look through job searches it seems like most jobs require a degree in either finance or accounting. So is an economics degree useless?

I would definitely suggest that you go into Economics, with the main reason being that the degree requires and represents logic and critical thinking. Especially since you are heading into finance, the degree will give you a
broad view of the economy, which will serve as a good base for you.

I friend of mine told me this:"I can tell you that I majored in Economics, and it was one of the large factors that helped me to get hired where I am today, being that I didn't have any experience in banking."

Now, you're probably considering business administration, but Business Administration I kind of see as something that for an undergrad is not so useful, it gives you a broad view of the business world without any real experience. Once you have the working experience, the MBA will provide with the tools you need to progress.

Also, a degree in economics is looked upon a lot better because
of the critical thinking aspect. I hope this helped.

Thanks for the advice blandon! Much appreciated.

Finance is just watered-down Econ with more of a micro-level slant.

Econ is much more respectable, prestigious, and is a better major for graduate school applications. But if you want a decent-paying job right out of UG, go for Finance. You decide.
