If you want to go into trading/portfolio management then finance courses will teach you analysis skills you will be using. However, you need a good background in economics in order to understand the market forces that influence the market sectors in which you trade. It also helps to have knowledge of accounting practices when you are analyzing the financial statements of the companies you are trading.

Personally, I built a great career using my knowledge of economics, accounting, finance and French all of which I studied either as a major or minor when pursuing my BA and MBA degrees. I have used skills from every one of those disciplines just about every day of my 25 years in business.

Im personally thinking Politics because thats another thing Im interested in. Do minors carry much weight? if so how much? also do people have 2 or more minors and is that something i should consider?

^If your going to do Economics as your major, then Politics would definitely be a good minor, but I am not soo sure for a finance major. Minor's usually are what your really trying to get an in-depth knowledge about. For example a friend of mine is going to study mechanical engineering, with a minor in physics because he wants to apply it his overall study. If you do economics, then politics would be a really good minor because you could easily apply it to your major.

if ur majoring in Econ and if u minor in political science, how will that help u(minoring in PS)? like other than it might look good on an application to a law school?

shoot man
UCSD doesn't have finance
so far people have advised me that overall Economics is a better major than business administration, i guess i will minor in Business

^lol I did. Punjabi Pride: you shoul be ok with a BS in econ from UCSD, but you will need really high gpa like magna cum laude gpa to get into IB or other elite jobs.

If you want to do law than I suggest doing doing econ because its basically going to give you the same job prospects towards a career and you can earn a higher gpa for law school and its a social science. Once you mentioned law, you should definitely think about econ instead because it makes a big difference in your case.

So I'm still a bit unclear as to wether Econ or Finance would be a better major. Let me bring several other things into the pictures. Lets say the person is going to a Big State U. and is also definiately combining pre-med into the mix e.g pre-med/finance pre-med/economics. This person is not quite sure of wether he would like to pursue a career in trading by going to a business school after graduation or medical school but is leaning more towards business school and just keeping medical school as a back up. People have also stated that finance is better because it teachers accounting which is neccecary for analyzation of financial statements but what about taking economics with lets say 2 courses in accounting? Will that not suffice?

A business education is not necessary to get into trading, even at the most signifcant firms. Their training program covers everything you need to know.

So if you like business, then study business. But if you don't, you dont' have to.

actually from what everyone tells me, actual medical students that I know told me that econ is better if you want to do pre-med and you WILL get recruited by top places. Which state school are you looking at because it really depends, but if you are looking at Illinois, Texas, UMichigan, UC's, Uminnesota or UWashington or UNC-Chapel Hill, then your good.
