Econ vs Haas

I was just wondering how much easier, if at all, getting into econ is compared to getting into haas. I was originally planning on applying to haas and if I got in then applying for a double major with business and econ, but if econ happens to be significantly easier to get into then I think I would just apply for econ. I should probably point out that econ is my primary interest. Thanks for any input on the difficulty of the admissions process for both majors.

bump…and i figure i should specify uc berkeley for econ…

Since you’re not admitted directly to a major at Cal…

It is possible to declare another major once on campus if you are
admitted to the College of letters and Science. You will need to discuss
declaration of the new major with a College advisor to see if you can
declare it by the end of the first semester. They want students to
declare within a reasonable time once they begin at UCB.

So, I think you can apply as any major in L&S then declare whatever you want once you get in. Above was the reply I got when I asked if I could declare Comp Sci (B.A.) if I was admitted to applied math and didn’t like it.

Econ has a low acceptance rate, but some majors don’t.

^^clearly doesn’t know anything about haas.

you can’t apply to college of a&s and try to switch to haas school of business. if ur primary interest is econ u should obviously do econ since haas’s rate is 6%. i don’t know what econ is but its significantly higher. probably around high 20%

well, i like to look at haas’s admit rate for eligible candidates since i’m sure i would be eligible which is around 20-25ish% which i’m guessing is close to econ’s admit rate though i’m not sure…so i was wondering if there was a significant difference in the “quality” of the applicants such as in gpa (though i think it’s pretty similar for econ and haas) and EC’s (which i think may be a big difference though i rly have no idea)…though currently most of my ec’s are geared towards leadership and business…and the business ones don’t seem all that useful for econ, though i’m hoping few ppl would have econ-related ec’s and so it won’t rly matter…

Haas’s acceptance for ELIGIBLE candidates is about 21% whereas Economics overall acceptance rate is 18.3% as stated by the UC Berkeley Transfer brochure.

oh wow, that comes as a complete shock to me lol, i was expecting econ to be much higher and definitely not lower…hmm…i’ll have to think about this a lot harder now…

thanks a lot, i guess i must have over looked the ucb transfer brochure when i was looking for it myself lol

hmm…actually i went back to look at the brochure and i realized i have seen it before, it lumps all the social sciences into the one admit rate of 18.3%…i was wondering if anyone knew wat econ was specifically…though now that i think about it i guess econ would be one of the more popular majors and so it could be around there or even lower…and probably not higher…also, interestingly enough, uc stat finder gives an entirely different admissions rate than the brochure…

Econ is about 18%, this post got me curious about it so I asked my UCB TAP advisor. lol it is actually a lower overall acceptance rate but keep in mind that those who apply to Haas generally have higher GPAs.

Be careful who you ask for advise from. Some students will give you baseless assumptions that are just worthless.
Yes, Haas is very competitive. But so many people I have seen make it seem almost impossible to be accepted when its really not.
The acceptance rate is around 23%.
If your planning on majoring in business specifically, i would apply. If you want to get in, i would apply for interdisiplinary studies and create a major based around business classes.
You cannot change your major to business once your transfer to College of letters and science.

But again, do not be disappointed if you grades are not a stellar as the majority.

I know someone who was accepted with a 3.2 average gpa. It can happen, you just have to want it and work for it. Period.

wasupieboy- Thanks a lot! that is really helpful, i wish i had a ucb tap advisor lol

eastbayucc- thanks for the encouragement :] i’m not too worried about gpa since i currently have a 4.0…though it may drop to a 3.9 by the time i apply but i dont think there’s much of a difference between 3.9 and 4.0 anyways, and wow, 3.2 gpa…that’s amazing

thanks a lot guys, u guys really answered my question :D

im pretty sure just having a 3.8+ is good enough.

yea, i doubt there’s much of a difference between all those rly high gpa’s…
