Economic Situation in Michigan

Is the current economic situation in michigan having any major effects on the school other than increase in tuition?

My mom is worried about what effect the unemployment rate is having on the school, and it has me worrying too.

The loss of the Promise Grant, the cutting of many programs, having to spread less aid around to more people, etc. The normal things you would expect in an economy such as Michigan’s. Could you be a bit more specific?

I actually don’t know what the normal things to expect in an economy like Michigan’s are because I am not familiar with the way American economies work, well not really how it works, more like how the economy specifically affects american schools.

But to be more specific, is there any chance for science programs, specifically the biology department and and research programs being cut? And is there any chance for the study abroad program being affected in any major way?

Sorry I wasn’t clear enough but thanks for your response.

First off, there is not biology department. There is a human biology major, a microbiology and molecular genetics major, and a biochemistry and molecular biology major, all of which are under the college natural science. Every college at MSU is, unfortunately, experiencing budget cuts. MSU is trying hard to keep it’s funding for research, but cuts are also being made in that area as well.

I don’t know about biology-related programs, but I know about jobs/research programs in general.
There are a lot of cuts being made, don’t get me wrong - but there are still plenty of opportunities out there in terms of research for those who look for them. In terms of employment, while most of Michigan is suffering it is still really easy to find an on-campus job during the school year as a student. First of all, if you are willing to work in the caf they will literally hire anyone. Facilities maintenance, dining maintenance, and sparty’s also have relatively low standards for hiring. Other jobs such as night receptionists/day receptionists or research/internship positions are a bit harder to find and contingent on your resume/skills/gpa, but they are still relatively plentiful. Myspartancareer.com lists a lot of on-campus jobs in addition to Venture.msu.edu, a website for undergraduate research opportunities. In terms of other research opportunities, there are also courses you can take specifically geared towards research opportunities (some through freshman seminars, some through the honors college, etc.)

In terms of study abroad programs, there are tons - we have among the largest of study abroad programs in the US and that is not going to change. Enrollment is down in study abroad programs due to the financial hardships many families are going through, but not enough to significantly impact the number and quality of programs

Don’t forget zoology, the most important!

There are cuts being made, but nothing completely crippling. Actually, the physics department is raking in quite a bit of grant money, from what I hear…

thanks for your posts, you guys really assured me. I was afraid of getting on campus and finding 0 job or research opportunities lol. thanks again.

Nope, jobs are plentiful. And if you have work-study then you have a near-guaranteed job with AmericaReads or AmericaCounts.
