Hey all,
I’m a transfer student fishing for some in-depth information about the Economics and Business majors, specifically their rigor and instructor quality. I’ve read that even for diligent students, the upper-division courses are fairly brutal, and that GPAs take a nosedive. Can anyone confirm how truthful this claim is? All input (and any additional suggestions/information), however brief, would be highly appreciated!
Hey Lechuza,
If you have been accepted, congratulations! I am an Economics major at UNC. I transferred from another four-year school. I had a 3.95GPA, so I was a pretty good student. The funny thing is that every transfer student thinks they will avoid the slump. Most people who transfer here are coming from being the best at their various schools.
As of now, I have taken six of eight economics courses for my major (including an advanced one). I enjoy it, but I don’t want to downplay the difficulty. Econ 410 was the hardest class I have taken in college. In economics, I have yet to find a “great” instructor. I’ve had one good instructor, and mostly mediocre or bad ones. The economics class have killed my GPA. I have been told by an instructor that the economics department wants the averages in their classes to be a C+. Keep in mind the quality of students at UNC. My cumulative GPA has fallen over .5 grade points. I like economics, but I don’t know if I would recommend it per say. If you really have an interest, then go for it, but I wouldn’t do economics unless you really like it.
That all said, I really love Carolina. It has been one of my best decisions to come here. If you have more specific or more questions, feel free to message me or reply here.
