Economics and Mathematics: Questions

Hi,

I will be attending college in US this fall. I am enrolled in a private LAC. I want to apply to CMU (H&SS) for fall of 2011. I would be considered an international non-aid transfer applicant.
What courses should I take to be a competitive sophomore transfer? I could not find any specific requirements on the site.

My high school stats are as follows

O-Levels (fresh and soph years): straight As
English-96
Maths-97
Economics-97
Accounting-98
Business Studies-97
Pakistan Studies-97
Islamiyat-95
Urdu-91

AS-Levls (junior year):
Maths-A
Accounting-A
Economics-A
Business Studies-A

A-Levls (senior yr): Same subjects as AS-Levels. The result is pending.

Awards:

Full scholarship from school for both AS and A-levels
4 Academics Awards from school for O-Levels.
World Distinction in Accounting AS-Level 2009 (along with a small cash prize from University of Cambridge International Examinations)
Regional Distinction for scoring the highest overall in AS 2009: Best Across Three and Four AS-Levels.
I got an academic award from my school for both the distinctions.

SAT1-2230 (M790, W800, V640)
SAT2-2370 (M1 800, M2 800, Physics 770)
TOEFL-111

I have never studied natural sciences in my high school but for my physics SAT, I had to study from the scratch. I took it in my senior year.

My Ecs are pretty weak. I belong to a very small rural town in Pakistan. There is nothing much to do outside school

ECs: Writer and Editor for School Magazine (4yrs), Cricket (4yrs), badminton (4yrs), school Prefect (2 years), headgirl runner-up, 2 internships in the xport and finance depts of two of the leading firms of the city, SOS Village volunteer (1yr), Assistant Maths and Econ teacher at school (2yrs), Counsellor for juniors (2 yrs)....several others

Do I stand a chance at H&SS?

Please do reply.

BUMP!!!

Econ is in HSS, but Mathematics is in the Mellon College of Science. You could take it as a double major though :)

your existing classes seem competitive for Econ, as they are pretty much all the classes one would expect out of an econ major. Your ECs are also competitive for HSS.

For this upcoming year, I would advise you to have a look at HSS’s general education section. ([GenEd Requirements | General Education Program, Carnegie Mellon University](GenEd Requirements | General Education Program, Carnegie Mellon University)) Take classes which are comparable to existing courses - for example, a general math/calc course, a history course, a psychology course… all of these would likely suffice in terms of transferable credits under HSS’s transfer credit policy, which is very lenient.

It would also help to take Econ courses, obviously, since this is your intended area of study.

I am not any kind of admissions officer, so this is just my best guess - you won’t find anything better than that on this board. To get info straight from the dragon’s mouth, try emailing the admissions email and ask about transfer policies to HSS!

@completelykate:
Thanks a lot :)

Actually, I emailed them but did not get any reply back.

CMU offers a joint B.S. degree in [economics and mathematical sciences](http://www.tepper.cmu.edu/undergraduate-economics/academics/curricula/majors-in-economics/bs-in-economics-and-mathematical-sciences/index.aspx</a>). You should contact H&SS to get further information on how to apply.

I will be applying for the joint BS degree.
