What is the reputation of the professors in the Economics Department at Carleton? Do they have an ability to turn dry material into interesting lectures/ discussions?

Hi! This thread might help.

In general, I have heard generally positive reports about the Econ professors and departments. I’m a science major and, to be fair, I’ve only taken one Econ class here (intro with Martha Paas, who is an awesome professor). However, Econ is one of the most popular majors at Carleton (I think it’s either 5th or 3rd), and most of my friends who are Econ majors have said nothing but positive things about the department (besides, of course, from the workload, haha…but that’s to be expected in any upper-level class).

Yeah, economics is typically just behind Biology and Poli Sci/IR in ~ the # 3 spot for popularity among majors declared.

There’s a great article in this issue of The Voice, the Carleton alumni magazine, about new wave teaching initiatives at the school in this era of the “flipped classroom,” an evolution that plays perfectly to Carleton’s amazing professors. Aaron Swoboda is profiled, himself a former Carl (Class of '01), now an Asst Prof after returning from a PhD stint at Berkeley. Definitely worth a read. “Tightening the Feedback Loop” in:

Off campus teaching is just as great. The Carleton Seminar in Cambridge is one of the oldest and most popular programs offered abroad, taught jointly by Carleton and Cambridge faculty over the summer.

Swoboda is the professor who inspired me to consider applying ED to Carleton this fall. I went to the quantitative reasoning institute last summer after my sophomore year. There aren’t many profs who will take time to teach and recruit high school students. I could tell he really loves teaching.

^Swoboda is awesome. I haven’t taken any of his classes, but he is one of the faculty advisors for a program I am currently and he’s been wonderful - I’m not surprised at all to find out that he reaches out to prospective students as well.
