Economics at Northeastern

I am going to Northeastern this Fall majoring in Economics. I am planning on doing a double major in Economics and Math (but I have the international orientation). Can anyone share their experience with Economics (or Economics and Math) major?

Most people dual with Math and Economics, not double. That way you don’t take stupid classes like physics.

Is a dual in Math and Economics like a combined degree? And how do we waive classes like physics like you said?

Yes a dual degree is a combined degree. It’s like an entirely different major with its own requirements- and physics isn’t one of them. Whereas if you were to double in math and econ, you would have to do every single requirement for both of them, including 7 econ electives, all the math electives, and physics.

but I still have to fulfill the core requirements right?

Everyone has to do the full requirements. The math/econ dual is a BS degree, so you don’t need to do a foreign language and your art/humanities requirement is just one class (instead of one art and one humanities). The major will cover the social science, math 1, math 2, and science requirements. You just need:

College Writing
Advanced Writing
Comparative Cultures
Arts/Humanities
Upper Level Elective outside the major
Experiential Learning

Everyone does co-op because we have a pretty good co-op advisor (if you pick the one who does econ). As a math major, you have to do a class that talks about the co-op experience after you’ve done it, but it’s not that bad and it’s cool to hear about other jobs.

If i choose to study abroad, does it count as comparative cultures?

Only if you take a class while abroad that counts, and you have to get it approved by your academic advisor.

thank you, this helped a lot, and one more question, do we choose our courses or the advisors will do that?

You go to orientation in order to talk to your advisors. You both pick your classes.

thank you, that helps a lot
