Economics at UT Austin vs. MIS at TX State?

I’m transferring from ACC and planning on majoring on either MIS or economics.

I’m applying to UT Austin, but as a transfer student I know it is very difficult to transfer into McCombs, so my other option is Economics at the Liberal Arts college.

I’m also going to apply to Texas State, but I would choose MIS.

I’m still deciding on future career choices, but all I know for right now is that I want to work in a business environment and use technology. I’ve looked at becoming a Market Research Analyst or DBA (database administrator) but I’m not too sure right now.

I’m taking macroeconomics right now and it’s going great, I wouldn’t mind majoring in it. But on the other hand, MIS probably teaches more “practical skills” for careers - like SQL, database management, etc.

I’ve always wanted to go to UT and it would be way more convenient because I live in Austin (South Austin, so I live fairly close to TX State too) but I’m not sure if I would be accepted into McCombs, and I don’t know if an bachelor’s in Econ would be “enough.”

On the other hand, does TX State have a good business school? I know I’m posting this under the UT forum so please don’t be biased.

@GPAnonymity, good questions you ask as you think through options. One thing to note that sometimes doesn’t come up in conversations enough is: the most motivated students at Texas State (or any school) are equally competitive with those at even the most competitive universities in the country. UT Austin is a national school, ranked somewhere in just about everything. Texas State is a regional school that focuses on educating students with skills to propel life and careers. None of that really matters in the long run. You seem a highly motivated student, so on the surface, you would likely thrive at either school you choose. You also lose nothing in applying to both. Then you can visit both in more detail, see how each is a fit for you. You’ll do well at either school.
