Economics department

What is the reputation of the economics department at Wellesley?

Really good! Econ is the single most popular major, tends to hover around 100 majors (out of a class of roughly 600, so very significant). Tons of great professors and great class offerings. There’s a little bit of sniping from other departments towards the econ department (on the student level mostly good natured, on the faculty level perhaps a little more pointed but nothing extreme, I don’t think), because of the prominence of the department on campus. Alums do very well and despite some people’s fears we don’t all become banking robots (although many do go into banking and other positions in finance and that is fine, too  ). I majored in econ (and math) and overall was very happy with my major(s).

Thank you, advantagious. Even though I do not like the idea of my daughter attending an all-women’s college, I will pass along this information to her. It’s what I suspected based on reading the “Rate My Professor” website. My daughter thinks, and she is beginning to convince me, that no college is perfect, and maybe the advantages of going to Wellesley outweigh the disadvantages. Too bad Wellesley does not have an ED2 option. If Wellesley had an ED2 option, she’d arrange a visit now in order decide if she wanted to apply ED2. (We are on the west coast, so it would be a big deal.) Thanks again.
