Economics for leaders

This is an off-the-wall guess, but here’s what I think about the EFL application. Many of you have expressed concern that the application was vague and not in-depth, thus raising questions of whether or not the program is competitive. My S got an email (and mail) about the program telling him to put P201 as his code. After wondering the same thing, I started to ASSUME that maybe the P201 code indicated he scored over a 201 on the PSAT, so maybe they already knew he was a National Merit Scholar. Crazy guess, but if anyone else was instructed to put P201 and also score 201+ on the PSAT, maybe Sherlock Holmes is on to something! I wouldn’t have even known about the program if he hadn’t been invited to apply, so again I just ASSUME the invitation was due to his PSAT score.

UCLA! Anyone else?

Those of you flying to UCLA, are you going to any fellow applicants at the airport? Did EFL give any info about other applicants?

Economics for Leaders is an incredible program!!!

Chicago people, have you guys recieved your orientation packets yet?

The summer 2010 applications are online.

For those of you who were accepted, what kind of stats did you have that they asked for? obviously there weren’t alot, but gpa?

My son received an email and a mail packet inviting him to apply and telling him to put 'P201" as his code. I have always suspected this is because he made over a 200 on his PSAT. Other than that, he was #3 in the class at the time he applied, 4.0. The kids seemed very bright but not nerdy. He really enjoyed it and made a lot of great friends. Good luck.

Do they allow cell phones at this program? i understand that we will not be permitted to have them in sessions, but do you have to leave them at home?

I am not clear on one of the items in the application. It asks for YEAR IN SCHOOL. What are you filling in that box?

You can take cell phones.

I applied a couple weeks ago. I really hope I make it…

for the year, I put 11 because I am in 11th grade

Thanks Danng! That makes sense.

What were all of your preferences?

I listed:
1st) Cornell University
2nd) College of William and Mary
3rd) Babson College

all for geographical reasons. I really hope that I get my first choice thought…

Is this program a scam? No recommendations, no test scores, not even transcript…

No, it is definitely not a scam. But I guess they are sort of “using” the kids to help teach high school economics teachers new & improved ways of teaching economics. Well, not really using them but sort of like a win-win situation. It only costs a small fee, I guess to cover some of the food expenses. $150-200ish if I recall, depending on the university.

They do ask for your class rank…but I am curious how other invitees scored on their PSAT tests. I have a feeling the invitations might be based off of that, but that is total speculation.

Son enjoyed it, met some great people, and would do it again. And I think it looked great on his resume and boosted his leadership experience.

This is a good program. Summer programs that cost very little, like this one, are usually good program and are selective. Scam applies to those that try to get money out of you while providing little value. Not this one for sure.

“They do ask for your class rank…but I am curious how other invitees scored on their PSAT tests.”

I’m not even seeing where they ask for class rank. The most they ask for is GPA. Am I missing something?

I really don’t get how they make decisions with no transcript, no test scores, no recommendations. Just an essay? Really?

They do not ask for PSAT, only GPA and a short answer response, I believe. I received my invite to Vanderbilt’s program yesterday; has anyone else received invitations yet? I was under the impression I wouldn’t find out until mid-April, so I’m extremely surprised. Are there fewer applicants this year (thus the early notice)?

@windowbob - I do not think PSAT is factored into the decisions, especially b/c the flyer/brochure I received in the mail only referred to my HOBY experience. If you’re truly curious, though, my PSAT score was a 236.

I’m just saying that I think their list of potential candidates (aka mailing list) is generated from PSAT scores of 200+. That’s why they don’t have an extensive application.
